I am here again, talking about the final plans we are drafting for our master bedroom makeover.

If you’ve missed any, I’ve shown you several images of serene master bedrooms that have inspired the general feel I hope to accomplish.  Then I discussed design elements I hope to incorporate into the room.  Then I took you online shopping with me to view some of the things I’ve contemplated purchasing or things to keep looking for while out and about at thrift stores or antique stores.  Finally, I would like to show you examples of the things we intend to DIY for this space.  The things I either can’t find or afford, or can save us money by making ourselves.

Sewing bedding to custom fit our needs and desires is going to be a big one for me.  However, it’s times like these that I am so grateful I learned the skill of sewing, as I much prefer to create the exact look I prefer rather than searching high and low for high priced items.

It’s all going to start with a beautiful, flow-y bed skirt – like this one below.

Then I am hoping to find the perfect linen fabric to make my own duvet cover for our Linenspa down comforter.  I love the bunched up, wrinkled look of linen like seen in this image.

I’d like to top the bed off with some lovely pleated, ruffled or tied accent pillows made from textured fabric (such as linen) as well.

I also love this pillowcase with the contrasting band and button edges.  While I don’t plan to introduce red into the space, I love the idea of this striped pillow below.

I’m also toying with the idea of adding a long grain sack striped pillow as an accent pillow as well.

Can never have too many pillows!  I am also dying over that frayed throw blanket and may incorporate the frayed ruffles into something.

We have a big bay window in the space and I like the window treatment in this image below.  I think I’ve sewn every curtain in our house so far, because I love getting just the right length and bunch that I hope for.

On the handy hubs list of DIY’s is a lot of woodworking, which if he can find the time – he loves to do.  We both agree that it would be great to have a bench at the end of the bed.  The one in this image looks easy enough to build and we love the simplicity of it.

We are super excited about the design we’ve sketched up for the bed itself.  We wanted sort of a elegant mantel piece for the headboard, and are still undecided about whether or not we want a foot board.

The plan my husband has sketched up is somewhere along the lines of these next two images.

We like the creamy color of the above mantel with the natural wood piece on top.

And then the image below represents about the dimensions and some of the woodworking he has planned.

I am pretty excited to see it come together, and it will actually be the first project we tackle.  I’ve told him I need to see the bed (which is the main focal point in a master bedroom) complete and then I can envision the rest of the room better and decide on paint colors.  That is just how my brain is working with this space.

We also would like to add a sliding door to our closet space (which is currently the babies room), for convenience and appeal.  I would really like to find a old natural wood door for this project, but we may end up building from scratch to save on money.

Last winter, when snow netted Emily an unexpected day off, she set her sights on using a pair of yard-sale doors to fashion a sliding barn-style entrance to the home office. She balked upon discovering that "the track alone cost a couple of hundred dollars," so she substituted casters and plumbing pipes for the expensive kit. Office doors, $78: Fifty-eight dollars' worth of hardware—including casters and plumbing pipes—transformed two salvaged $10 doors into a barn-style entry. (hardware; homedepot.com)

We were given an old dresser that has layers of sad sad paint jobs on it, but has great form.  We plan to strip the paint down completely and go from there to restore its beauty.  I really like the finish job in the dresser below.  I think I’ll put this in the bay window.

Finally, to make our built in closet wall look better, we have a bunch of old pieces of wood and plan to make some crates or boxes out of them and hopefully add some antique looking text to the outside.  These will not only look great but add some storage for out of season clothes and such.

That wraps up the major DIY projects we have in mind.  And yes, I know – we have our work cut out for us.  If only life would slow down for a moment so we could actually work on it 😉

I am still totally unsure of what to put on the walls for decor, if anything, but I’m sure there will be several trips to the thrift stores or digging through my stash to decorate the tops of side tables and dressers.  It is really those small touches that I enjoy doing the most.

I will certainly keep you updated with any progress we make, but for now we have a little more summer fun to be had, and then we are going to bite down hard on the projects for our master bedroom – starting with the mantel bed frame.

Thanks for following along!  And out of curiosity (and trying to be helpful), if we do complete these DIY projects, are there any you would be interested in having a tutorial for?

  1. I love the vintage Chocolat under the bed crate as well as the crates with flowers on top. Those are nice shabby-chic looks for a modern décor. Have you ever done shelving or storage DIY’s with wooden wine crates? They add a wine-themed accent to kitchens, living rooms and even bathrooms.

  2. Lots of great inspiration here! If your bedroom turns out anything like your kitchen, I am sure it will be beautiful. 🙂
