Girls shared room and simple organizational ideas for a small bedroom.

I am in the midst of trying to spring clean 1 room at a time, just as I am able.  The time came to clean up my 2 youngest girls shared bedroom – or more appropriately put – the 2 pack rats bedroom.

It was bad.

Really, really bad.

There was toy crap shoved in every nook and cranny, toys they never even played with taking up precious space, and the room looked like a cluttered mess.

It was going to take a bit more than the standard “spring clean” to get this room up to par.

I’ve shared the makeover details of this space a few years ago, HERE.  Today, I want to share how we purged and organized it better, added some DIY’s that suited their personalities and growing ages better, and how we used a few special items to refresh and liven it up again.

Come on it through the pink door.

We gave it a fresh coat of pink paint for one major reason – the girls wanted this pink on their walls so badly.

I just couldn’t do it.  It would give me anxiety to have a room all this pink.

So we settled for the door 😉

Then we added these inexpensive IKEA spice racks for bookshelves.  They both love books so much and I wanted their room to have more books than toys.  Without the room for an actual bookshelf, these on-the-wall shelves were a much better solution.

We have a large bookshelf in our basement so I can rotate the books after they have had their fill of this selection.  I love to snag vintage looking books from thrift stores when I see them.

Then I set to work on organizing their closet better for them.

The baskets have very few essential items in them – like missing sock matches, bed robes, their money, etc.

They only got to keep a few of their favorite stuffed animals and dolls in the toy box underneath.

What we really needed was a way for them to easily store and clean up their collection of small dolls.  I was thrilled to find this adorable white rolling cart at World Market.

They like to drag their special toys out to the living room to play, and now they can easily do that and clean it up just as easily.

My kids are pretty easy when it comes to Holiday’s and Birthdays.  They ask for the same things – princess’s, ponies, figurines – and we just add to their collections slowly.

I threw in some dollar store containers in the drawers to keep it organized and they love rolling around their collections to play with.

We still keep their beautiful grandma-made baby blessing dresses on the walls for display.

What these 2 girls really love to do is sit down to a table to color and craft together (they are little besties).  They always drug their mess to the kitchen table, which was okay until dinner time.  I wanted to give them a special spot in their room to create.  Probably a total selfish decision on my part – but they love this little desk, none-the-less.

This was a custom built desk and bench set, by my sweet husband who totally caved to my batting eyes.  It’s a bit taller than a kids desk, but smaller than a standard table.  It should suit them for years to come.

It is made out of pine and then I stained it with Minwax 61860 1 Quart White Wash Pickling Stain
– which I just love and use all the time.

It keeps the beautiful wood tones for my husbands liking, but turns wood a beautiful white color for my liking.

Now I’ll share what we changed over by their dad-made beds.  (See more details on the beds in THIS post).

The bedding pretty much stayed the same, except I threw in these darling and affordable velvet pillows from World Market.

I let each girl pick their color of choice from all the many color options they had.

I was a proud mother when they picked a soft pink and a soft blue.

Their grandmother made the sweet crocheted pillows and I made their duvet covers (more on that in my first post).

Grandma also made them each a Raggedy Anne doll when they were babies.

They really enjoy having books handy by their beds as well, stored in some old plate racks my mom was disposing of.

We also added some hanging frames, also from World Market.  I really wanted to incorporate some images of them into their rooms this time, and these frames were perfect for easily hanging around the room.

We are going to attempt to keep my childhood nightstand clean and simple, just like so.

Though I imagine my daughter has plans of her own 😉

We used to have a chalkboard up in their room, but they just were not using it any more.  We decided instead to place a mirror in there and luckily we had an old hand-me-down one sitting in our garage.  My husband built a frame around it, and added a ballerina bar.

That’s what the girls call it, any way.

I still love my thrift store makeover, grain sack stool in here as well.

And other sweet thrift store treasures for display.

I’m so pleased we were able to refresh this space and love it again, with just a few simple touches to suit their needs.  Kids change so fast, and I believe their rooms should try to change with them – if even just a little.

Remember, you can see how it looked a few years ago in my first shared bedroom post and compare it to now.

But stay tuned later this week, I’ll be sharing a short little video of the girls as they share their thoughts on this space.

It’s pretty silly.

I’d love to hear your thoughts, opinions or questions you have about this girls shared room!

Have you been getting the cleaning itch as well and looking to refresh a few spots in your home too?

Thanks for reading!
