I’ll never forget the first time I took my oldest daughter trick-or-treating around the neighborhood.  Not only was it such a fun and memorable time with her, but I can specifically recall the impressions I had as home-owner after home-owner opened up their front door.

One person welcomed us with an in-your-face-way-too-curious sniffer dog.  #stayoutofmybubble

Some homes felt so dark and lonely inside.  #sosad #nowecantstaytochat

Others seemed to have so many shoes, coats, and overall clutter spilling out of their front door.  #Ihopethiscandyisclean

And of course, there is always a whiff of smells when that door opens.

Some pleasant.  Some . . . not so much.

But one home made a lasting impression on me.  This sweet lady opened up her door and greeted us with not only a smile, but the overwhelming smells of wassail, cinnamon, pumpkin spice . . . it was like Autumn Heaven.

She proceeded to grab the candy bowl that was on a lovely console in the entry way, modestly decorated with fresh florals, storage baskets and one sweet little witch figurine.

That little peek into her home was such a delight.

I have since pondered on the importance of that very first greeting we offer those who come upon our homes.  Or what is the first thing our loved ones feel when they come home from a long day?

I can’t help but feel that no matter the size, shape or function of our entry way, it may be the most important spot in our home.

I think my friends over at Birch Lane must feel the same, which is why this week we are rolling out an inspirational series called “Make and Entrance with Birch Lane”.  It all starts here and now with me, and continues tomorrow with my sweet friend (and Haven conference roommate) Ashley, from Cherished Bliss.

I hope you’ll join us all week for this Fall home tour of our entry ways, and also on Instagram at @birchlane, where we get the amazing privilege of taking over their feed.

It’s going to be such an inspirational event!

While you are brainstorming for your own home, I wanted to be sure you didn’t feel you need to spend a fortune to decorate for Fall.  I want to show you 7 Natural elements, found right outside, that can add beauty and comfort to your homes this time of year.  I’ll also be sharing any product sources at the bottom of this post, for those of you who are interested in knowing where to purchase some of the items you see in my pictures.

**By the way, some of these images are more staged for pictures (purely for my own benefit and fun) and others are a more casual, closer to real life scene.  I thought it would be fun to include both 😉 .  And surprisingly, my little 5 year old sweetie was being cooperative!

DECORATE YOUR HOME FOR FALL WITH THESE 7 NATURAL ELEMENTS

#1.  Pumpkins

We are lucky to have quite a few pumpkin patches surrounding our area, but just the placement of a few here and there can be such an simple and fun solution to welcoming Fall into your home.

Although there are many fun things you can do to spruce them up, I can’t help but feel they are perfect just as mother nature intended them to be.

I love how this heirloom pumpkin looks cozied up next to my chunky knit throw and textured pillow.

#2.  Changing Leaves

I always keep outdoor clippers or sharp scissors in my car, just in case I come across a branch or irresistible clippings on the side of the road.  Changing leaves are such a beautiful part of Fall and bringing them into the home can add so much natural beauty to your decor.

I simply plop them in a vase all by themselves, and don’t even worry about water.  I just let them dry as they are and enjoy them for weeks.

These leaves were clipped from a bush, just outside in my backyard.

#3.  Wheat Clippings

I love all the variety of wheat or even weed clippings found in fields this time of year.  They are lovely all by themselves gathered in a basket or bucket.

I have been able to store some of my favorite wheat clippings for years and I like to bring them out every Fall season.

#4.  Boxwood or other bush clippings

A good timeless green wreath is always smart to keep in your decorating arsenal, but I had fun adding in some color changing boxwood clippings to my eucalyptus wreath.

I simply nestled them in there and have enjoyed the Fall variety it gives to my front door.

They will be easy to remove and I can keep my green wreath to move around in my home come Christmas time.

I like having a wreath on the inside and outside of my front door, so I can enjoy the look from both sides.

#5 & #6.  Pine cones and Tree fruit

My family and I enjoy collecting treasures on our walks in the evening.  A basket of pine cones can transition your home all through Fall and Winter.

I also like to place tree fruit such as peaches, pears, or apples in baskets around the home.  It makes for a very delicious decoration!

#7.  Floral Clippings

Whether they are from your backyard or the farmers market, floral clippings are a great way to bring a punch of beautiful warm colors into your home, without making a huge color commitment.

I’m not usually drawn to the color orange, but I love to sprinkle it around my home using flowers.

I get to enjoy the warmth of the color, without being too overwhelmed by it.

Now that I’ve shared those 7 Natural Elements with you, I encourage you to try your hand at bringing at least one of them indoors to enjoy.

I’ve managed to add all of them into this tiny entry way of ours, but feel free to sprinkle them throughout your house.

I have officially finished showing you our complete Fall home this year.  If you missed any rooms, you might like going back to see our deck, living room, and kitchen.

It was a beautiful Fall day when I took these images, and I was reminded about why I truly love to decorate and change our home for the seasons when I watched my children come home from school that day.

They could sense the excitement of the change of weather and upcoming traditions, all because of how I made our home feel.  That is so very satisfying for me as their homemaker and mother.

And it’s a duty I take very seriously 😉

Now I would love to share with you the links and sources for many of the beautiful items you see in these images.  I truly enjoyed working with Birch Lane on this project, as I’ve admired their catalogs that come in the mail for years!  It’s such an honor to get to share their designs in my home with you.

  1. Entry Way Bench – comes in several color options to suit your space.
  2. Rustic Numbered Coat Hook – I adore the vintage appeal of these hooks and the convenience of hanging my bag right out in the open.
  3. Crochet Tote Bag – My new favorite Target find!
  4. Wall Clock Organizer – This organizer could not be more perfect!  The clock is in perfect view from our bathroom so I can easily check to see if we are on time while getting ready for the day.  And I love the slots for mail and school papers!
  5. Huntwood Pendant Light – My husband helped me pick this out, because I was being way too indecisive.  I think he made a perfect choice!
  6. Circular Ivory Jute Rug – I have truly been looking for the perfect round rug for this entry way for years!  I was so excited to come across this one.  I think my rectangular entry way needed the curve, and this rug was just right!  I don’t even need a rug mat and it stays in place!  Love it!
  7. Faux Eucalyptus Wreath – Everyone needs a good classic green wreath in their tool box.  I don’t think you can go wrong with a Eucalyptus wreath or a Boxwood Wreath.
  8. Button Pillow Cover – I love me a good pillow!  Birch Lane has many to choose from!
  9. Dewitt Pillow Cover – I’ve actually meant to sew a pillow like this for some time.  I love that it is solid in color, but the texture and stitching adds so much.
  10. Chunky Knit Throw – I choose the color “pool” and it is a lovely autumn blue/green.  Instant cozy factor!
  11. Basket on Floor – Found it at Joann’s.

Did I miss anything you want to know about?  Feel free to ask!
