It’s a surprise.  It’s a ride.  It’s so much creativity and discovery flying out of one box.

It must be – Surprise Ride.

And your kid is going to fall in love with this subscription box.

Surprise Ride was my first experience with subscription boxes (read all about that here).  It’s been a love affair with these boxes ever since.  My kids and I just can’t get enough.

I thought Surprise Ride was such a fantastic option, I had to buy one to review for you in my line up of boxes for kids.

I have 7 points I will address, all designed to help you decide if this is the best subscription box for your child.

#1 – Area of Interest

The side of the box states, “the world in a box”.  I love that.  The main idea of the box is to expose your child to all sorts of adventures and discovery’s made in the world up until now.  When I saw there was a box devoted to Amelia Earhart, I knew my 8 year old daughter would be enthralled.  I wanted to show her that being a girl should not limit her dreams!  That, and her daddy is obsessed with airplanes so I knew they would have fun talking about it together.

Surprise Ride Review, subscription box for kids

Over on the Surprise Ride webpage, I can see boxes for magic, Australia, volcanoes, green thumb . . . and so on.  Oh man . . . I want them all – for my daughter of course 😉  Surprise Ride is really great for kids who are passionate about learning, who love making things with their own 2 hands, and find excitement in discovering new things.

 #2 – Age Range

The website states these boxes are for kids age 6-12.  I think that is a good estimate.

It is helpful if your child can read, as I’ve noticed my daughter reading through her goods several times in her quiet moments.  She really soaked everything up in this box.  But if you have a younger child, still learning to read, they will very much enjoy the time spent learning with you.

#3 – Single or Multiple Children

I am kind of torn with the idea of sharing this box with multiple children.  While I think it can be done if they are willing, the crafts and activities are designed for 1 child to learn and discover all they can about the topic.  Sharing might disrupt that learning – at least I think it would for my kids.  Rather, I let my oldest daughter soak this box in, and then she brought all her material and shared with the family one night.  She let her little siblings fly the airplane, we read from the books and we each got to try the snack (yep, they send a theme appropriate snack!).  This method worked great for us, and we were all able to enjoy pieces of her box.

#4 – Length of Engagement

If time truly equals value, you’ll get your money’s worth from this box, and more!  The box stays out in the open in her room for at least a week while she dabbles and plays with it.  Then we put it in her closet, where it still comes out to play every now and again.  Hours and hours of joy.

#5 – Assistance Needed

Will your child need your help?  Maybe.

How’s that for an answer?

Younger ones would definitely need some guidance and maybe help reading.  My daughter, being the oldest, is very independent and just wanted me to leave her with her box (and stop with the camera!).  So I did.  There are great kid friendly instructions for the craft projects, and with or without your help – they will have a good time.

#6 – Cost

Can you really put a cost on education and experience?  Well, actually you can – in this case.  But it is money well spent!

There are many price and purchase options found on the webpage, but here is a quick glance and 3 options (for the purpose of comparison).

Option 1: Buy a single box from all their themed choices for $34.99.

Option 2: Choose to be billed monthly for a subscription for $29.99.

Option 3: Pay upfront for an entire year, at $24.99 per month, and your first and last box are FREE!  Definitely the best deal!

Oh . . . and FREE shipping.  Wahoo!

#7 – Deals and Promotions

As you saw above, the best deal is buying a year at a time.  However, you can choose any subscription option and save $5.00, by clicking the link at the top of their website that says “save $5”.  It will then give you a promo code to use on subscriptions only.  You may consider signing up for their newsletter to be the first to hear about any other deals that become available.  They also will let you know what the next months themes is.  April is all about Bee’s, if you want to catch that one before it goes.

Each box also comes with a $5 off coupon for a gift subscription.

So let’s sum things up.  If your child jabbers your ear off about all the things they learn . . . if your child can easily become engrossed in discovery . . . if your child loves to make things . . . if your child would love an awesome package in the mail every month . . .

You need Surprise Ride.  Join the fun!
