Ladies.
Bust out those power tools.
There is some serious girl power going on today, all thanks to Home Depot and their do-it-herself workshops!
I tell my 3 daughters all the time “You can do anything a man can do”. Except I follow it with this statement, “but you probably won’t want to, so just pretend that you have no idea how to change oil, swap out light bulbs, call the power company, or carry that heavy load of crap.” Trust me on this one.
But every once in awhile, it’s good to shock the men by doing something they thought only they could do.
Because bloggers can never leave well enough alone, creatives all over the blog-o-sphere are sharing their own spin on the Seasonal Character Door Hanger project, and it’s sure to be a blast to see what everyone comes up with. Please don’t miss the line up at the end of my post.
The reason we are all here doing this today, is because on October 20, 2016, you too can head to your local Home Depot store at 6:30 and participate in building your own Seasonal Character Door Hanger. Grab your girlfriends and sisters, and sign up here to save your spot.
I opted to create a Halloween Jack-o-lantern character, after my kids informed me I was the most boring mom ever for not decorating for Halloween.
Admittingly, I’ve never been too excited about witches, ghosts, and goblins lurking around my house, but I figured a cute little pumpkin hanging on the door might be enough to convince the trick-or-treaters that they’ve come to a “fun Mom” home and there is sure to be some goodies inside.
My kids were so excited about what we were putting together, and I was excited to amuse them. I managed to have extra fun with it by giving it a pretty vintage vibe with the vintage pumpkin pattern (which I’m sharing the printable for below).
So follow along with me while I show you the steps to making a Vintage Jack-O-Lantern Character Door Hanger – so you too can be a fun mom!
Here are the supplies you will need, all of which you can find at your local Home Depot store.
- 2 each of 1/2″ x 4″ x 4′ hobby wood (3 pictured, because we bought extra just in case)
- 1 each of 1/4″ x 6″ x 4′ hobby wood
- Twine for hanging
- 3 each #8 eye screws
- assorted springs
- wood glue
- spray paint
- sand paper
- spray on adhesive
*You can use a hand saw for this project, but if you have a jigsaw and a orbital sander it will be much easier.
**Disclaimer: I understand the irony of a “do-it-herself” workshop and my husbands hands in the images. I needed someone to work while I took pictures. And I’m scared of the jigsaw 😉
First thing you will do is cut the 1 x 4 boards in half to make 4, 24 inch long pieces.
Then glue the boards onto the plywood with about an 1/8 inch spacing between them.
Be sure to press them down firm and hold them for a minute or so, so that they don’t move on you. After you have put the boards on the plywood, place some heavy objects (I used ceramic planters with rocks in them because that is what I had close at hand). Make sure not to move the boards around while doing this. Let the boards sit for at least 4 hours, overnight is best.
Next cut boards out to desired shape with a jig saw or hand saw and then sand the edges. We added curves around the four corners.
With your spray paint, give the wood a good cover making sure to spray inside the cracks.
Then you’ll cut your printable pattern (available below) to strips the same width as the wood planks.
Following the manufacture directions on the can of spray adhesive, cover the wood planks with the glue and then layer the paper on top.
Then you’ll cut away the excess paper off the edges, and with your sandpaper smooth the paper around the entire pumpkin. It’s up to you how “distressed” you want it to look.
Then I had my husband trace a face and a stem on the 1/4″ x 6″ board and cut it out with a jigsaw. If you don’t have a jigsaw, a hand held coping saw can also be used.
We applied 3 eye hooks to the top of the pumpkin, two for hanging purposes and a middle one to twist in springs for an industrial vintage approach to vines.
You can use wood glue to apply the face to the pumpkin shape.
And then top it off with a wood stem, also cut out of the 1/4″ x 6″ board using a jigsaw or hand saw.
It’s been a long time since we’ve worked on a quick and simple project like this, and it was such a blast to make.
I hope you enjoy this printable pattern, which can be used for your Jack-O-Lantern, coloring pages, or anything else you can imagine!
