I’ve always called myself a “work-from-home-mama”, but now with a home office space, I feel totally legit 😉 . And did you all know, when your work space is pretty, you get so much more done?!

I had no idea.

Or maybe it’s the fact that I can actually find a pencil when I need one.  Hmm?

Before we get into the nitty gritty details and sources for this space, let me remind you how far we’ve come.

When we moved into our home 4 years ago, this “formal living room” off the front door looked like this.

We had no need for a formal living room, but did want to add an extra bedroom upstairs.  So we turned it into the cutest darn cottage bedroom for our daughter, and I so loved this space.

As our family grew and other needs became evident, the space became empty again.  We installed new flooring from Floor & Decor, and planned ahead to make this a home office space where my husband and I could work on my online business and organize items to help our family and home function better.

We wanted to maximize the space for storage and function, which meant custom built pieces to fit the room were pretty necessary.   It’s a good thing my husband is brilliant with his big boy tools.

So take a close look at each side of the room below, and then I’ll walk you through the finer details of the space and how it all came together.

We wanted to include a small area for a wee one to sit and create or do homework by us if needed.  Ideally there would be enough spots for all 4 kids, but until we have a massive office . . . this small little desk will have to do.

First let me share all the goodies over on my computer work area.

Mr. TIDBITS made the office desk base, and we topped it with this faux marble table top from IKEA.

These lovely and extremely comfortable office desk chairs came from Joss and Main.

Adjustable, slide-able, creamy and delectable.  My dream office chair!

Now let me give you a peek into my drawers 😉

Home Office Organization

I embraced a white color scheme (for obvious TIDBITS reasons), and to make sure my kids didn’t try to steal my stuff and claim them.

What is it about organized office supplies that makes one so happy??

The expandable tray from Joss and Main is meant for utensils, but works perfectly for office supplies as well.

I love how the hubs built the bottom drawer to fit our printer.  It’s so convenient to have it right next to the desk and tucked away.

I also keep a few other frequently used office items close at hand.

There isn’t a room in a house where I don’t think a little open shelving can add character and function to a space.  Mr. TIDBITS built me a lovely scalloped shelf to store more office supplies a reach a way, as well as other pretty items to look at.

The show stopper item in this room is the 18 drawer apothecary cabinet, built by mine truly.  We worked with Kreg Jig to provide those free building plans for you, here.

The hardware is from Liberty Hardware, which we showed you how to install here.  I already showed you my painting techniques for giving new wood a subtle used and loved finish.

Home Office Makeover by TIDBITS

I haven’t yet filled all those wonderful drawers, as that will be another project for another day.  But let’s talk about the decor items I placed on top of the cabinet.

I found this old rose painting on a last minute antique store trip, looking for that something special.

Boy did I find it!

Home Office Makeover by TIDBITS

I never understood how folks could love art so much, but the patina, colors, wear, and image in this painting completely stole my heart and soul.  It’s crackling, torn, even has a couple of spider webs on the back.

I couldn’t love it any more.  I’ve never spent anywhere near $50.00 on art, but this one was worth every penny.

(Lamp also from Joss and Main).

I also came across this lovely spring cottage framed art, and knew it would be inspiring to look at in my office.

If you’ve been around my blog before, you’ve probably seen this blue chippy cubby a time or two.  It’s held flip flops, pumpkins, flowers, you name it.  But when I bought it at a thrift store years ago, I always envisioned it filled with office supplies and pretty little goodies.

All this time, I just needed the office.

Let’s take a minute to talk about the incredible woven shades from Blindsgalore.com.  They are from their Natural Woven Shades line, and I picked Montserrat Driftwood.

They are like icing on the cake in this space, and provide privacy and beauty to our windows at the front of our home.

The details and sources for these woven shades requires more attention, so I’ll be following up this post soon with all the details and help you need when selecting and ordering blinds from blindsgalore.com.

We have used their blinds before in our Master Bedroom and just love their selection.

I dressed this 3 pane window with a blue, white, white, blue drapery color scheme.

Now let’s chat about this cute little desk that is often being used by a cute little girl.

Home Office Makeover by TIDBITS

I found it for $15 at an antique store and had my husband run his sander over it . . . to death.

She chipped up to perfection.

The blue chair with it was a $5 upcycle from a thrift store.  There is nothing a bit of paint can’t fix.

Over in the corner is such much needed storage and organization.  This big filing cabinet was in my dads junk piles.  My husband used it for years in his garage.  It was all black, but I felt it was a bit too contrasting for this space.  I painted it with gray chalk paint and scuffed her back up.

On top, we keep some daily tasks organized in our magazine holders from Joss and Main.  I labeled them “to do”, “to sort”, “to read”.

That about wraps up our home office space makeover!

I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing how we transformed this space, and especially hope it inspired some ideas of your own.

Home Office Makeover by TIDBITS

There is little that my husband and I enjoy doing together more than fixing up a space to suit our family better.

I stand by the principles that our spaces should be full of items that are beautiful and functional for our stage of life.

  1. I love how your office turned out! I am interested in ordering the same blinds — trying to get a sample but currently out of stock. Can you tell me if you did 3 shades on one headrail or all separate?

    Thanks!

  2. Keeping the office well decorated is very important for staff productivity. Carefully considering office decorating ideas before implementing them will help to make sure staffs are happy. Staff happiness is extremely important for running a successful business. Office decorating ideas can always be discussed with staff before implementing them.

  3. I can’t believe this is DIY work! As to the white color scheme, it’s just wonderful. Have you filled the drawers yet? It would be great to see things arranged on the inside. I love the way you keep office supplies! When it comes to storing, I’m such a mess.

  4. Such a perfectly beautiful space! I love all of the soft cool colors and the built-in shelf above the desks is lovely as well as extremely useful ! I use office space near me at Evoma Office space sometimes when i cannt work from home or want to meet associates etc.

  5. I loved all your ideas and I found them very useful.

Guess what? My fav color is white as well.

I’m a ghost writer. And I do freelance work on upwork. I always did my work at home. However I always felt it wasn’t the appropriate place to work. I didn’t get that office atmosphere that I felt was motivating. I started going to a place called Ranch Office and I’ve met many other freelancers.

I’ve even hung out with them to other places. With these coworking places and offices I’ve even felt an improvement in the work I deliver to my clients.

Despite that I´d like to us some of your ideas or even suggest them in the place where I go

I think it would be awesome

  6. Wow, this sounds so promising and perfect, it worked great for me. I was looking to get my office a new look with better amenities.

  10. ran a sander over it…to death… that made me laugh out loud! hahaha! Everything is beautiful. Now I’m itching for a pretty space of my own. All in good time though. It looks great!

  11. I’m guessing your husband made the cute organizers on the desk and file cabinet? If so would he share the plans?

    1. Oh, I actually found that at a antique store. That’s a great idea for plans though. I’ll hit him up about it and see if he wants to. I’ll have to sweeten him up first 😉

    1. There is plenty other things to lead to distractions, no? 😉 . I sure appreciate you stopping by to see my office and thank you for taking the time to comment for me!
