I got to thinking about “The Christmas Tree“.  It is such an integral and symbolic part of Christmas.  In fact, I always always start my Holiday decorating with the tree.  Are you the same?

As I previously mentioned in my 6 Tips for Changing your Christmas Decor Theme post, the tree is a great place to start and set the tone for any of the other decor you might be adding to your home.

And then I thought some more . . . and realized that the Christmas tree is also the very very last decoration I take down after the Holidays are over.

What a thought, huh?  It all begins and ends with the Christmas Tree.

But what is in between, and is it any less important?

TIDBITS Colorful Christmas Tree | Balsam Hill 12 Bloggers of Christmas

No.  Of course not.  It’s what is in between the Christmas tree that makes this time of year so special.

But I’m not talking about the presents, the food, the shopping, the parties, or even Santa and his elves.

I’d like to share 3 things that make all the difference for me, if I make the effort to do them . . . between the Christmas tree.

1 – SPREAD JOY

Admittedly, it’s not natural for me to want to bake Christmas cookies with my kids, or pull out a Christmas craft mess for my little makers at heart.  It takes a grand amount of effort for me to think far enough ahead to plan just the right gift for someone I love.  I’m not inclined to venture outside of my comfort zone and routines to create one-of-a-kind moments for our family to share together.

Nope.  Spreading joy to those I love has to be a mindful decision and a sacrifice of my own desires.  But for every memorable treasured Christmas moment, the conscious decision to spread joy was at the root of it.  It’s those beautiful moments, in between the Christmas tree, that make this season magical.

2 – LIFT THOSE WHO ARE LONELY OR IN PAIN

This year, in the midst of my decking the halls, I’ve been surprisingly more aware of those who may find this time of year far more painful than joyous.  Those who have loved and lost, those who ache for love in whatever form, those who spend the days in silence and loneliness.  Even those who feel this Season brings too much stress and burden.

I find, the number of those who fall into these categories are not few, even in our own little circles.

It’s quite humbling to think of the burdens we can lift and share, by simple acts of kindness and service.  Without question, the times in my life where I have chosen to lift others during this Season are the dearest and most memorable Christmas moments of my life.

3 – A FOCUS ON THE TRUE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS

I have a short story for you.  I was 12 and my little sister Maegan was 6.  I had a grand idea to read little Megs a different story of Christ found in the bible, on the 12 nights leading up to Christmas.  Without my mothers knowledge, Maegan and I would sit on the floor of our bedroom and I’d open to a different story each night.  Calming the waters.  Feeding the thousands.  Healing the lepers.  Atoning for our sins.

Of course, little Maegan was restless and seemingly more interested in other things, and I was frustrated she wouldn’t listen to her older, much more wiser sister. 😉 . I was doing this all for her, after all.  Could she not see the importance of my grand idea??

Fast forward.  I came home from collage for the Holidays.  Maegan must have been about 12.  I was obsessed with boys, roommate drama, immersed in my studies, restless and seemingly more interested in other things.  I went upstairs, peeked into Maegan’s room, only to find her sitting on the floor with her bible open.

It didn’t take me long to realize what she was doing, and the reversed roles before me.  Little Megs reminded me, that the sure fire way to fill your heart with the true Spirit of Christmas, was to focus your whole heart on the Savior, Jesus Christ.

I was grateful for that reminder then, and grateful for it today.

Before we discuss details of this tree you see in my images, I encourage you all to think on these 3 things while you are setting up your tree this year, and between the moment you take it down.

1 – SPREAD JOY

2 – LIFT OTHERS

3 – THE TRUE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS

I hope we will all find greater joy in doing so.

You’ll notice I choose a white artificial tree, specifically the Denali white tree from Balsam Hill.  I love how the colorful ornaments really pop against the white.

It is absolutely stunning as the sun goes down and really lights up a room!

Both my husband and I were thrilled with how simple it was to set up, but my favorite feature is the small button you can easily step on to turn the lights on and off.

I had collected some authentic Shiny Brights vintage ornaments through the years, but didn’t quite have enough.  I was thrilled to find these Vintage Pastel ornaments from Balsam Hill that fit my vision perfectly.

The sweet little birds are my kiddos favorites, and the garland is a fun addition to our colorful theme.

I opted for the off white Juliette Fringed tree skirt, and filled the tree with Frozen Berry Picks and Icy Blue Poinsettia Picks, and other finds.  Blue Dupioni ribbon wraps the tree and a lovely fiber optic royal angel tops it off.

The gift boxes are a new addition to our Christmas this year, and I am excited to cut down on wrapping paper and have something re-usable.  My girls feel like they are royalty with thoughts of opening their ribbon tied boxes come Christmas day.

  2. Your tree is beautiful and actually inspiring. Thanks so much for sharing. I’m sure that your children are loving it. Thank you for putting emphasis on what’s really important about this season which is loving and sacrificing for others and remembering that we have Christmas because of Jesus choosing to leave Heaven and come to earth to be born as a baby.

  3. Oh Cindy! Your comment made my day! It’s so enjoyable doing this with my sister, and also helps me to stay focused on the things that matter most. Hope your Thanksgiving is wonderful!

  4. Christmas is magical because he sent us his son to show us the way and to die on the cross just for us, how much more than we give and love each other. I loved your story it was warm and wonderful, thank you. Have a Happy Thanksgiving.

  5. So Pretty, I wish I’d been brave enough to get a White tree when we replaced our old one 3 years ago. I did, however, venture to or local hardware store (Canadian Tire) to get and extension cord with one of those step on buttons. I do NOT miss getting on my hands and knees to plug it in. Thanks for the beautiful story and the emphasis on the TRUE meaning of Christmas
