Make sure the whole fam can label and identify the plants in the garden. DIY Natural Wood Plant Markers – so easy you won’t believe it!

Remember when I showed you our container herb garden?
Well, after explaining to my children for the 1500 time (slight exaggeration) which plant was which, I decided we needed some plant markers so they could identify them too.
While I was debating on what material to use for the markers, these were the contenders.
- Paint stir sticks – Ugly back side.
- Popsicle sticks – Pinterest has been there, done that.
- Painted white sticks – Hmmmm. Will paint seep into my soil???
- Metal hooks off Amazon – Don’t wanna spend that much.
- Flattened spoons with engraved lettering – Way cute . . . way too much effort.
So, I was left with my indecisive sorrows to roam the isles of Hobby Lobby.
Lo and behold, the most perfect perfect solution in the wood section. These darling, pre-made-to-look-perfectly-rustic, natural wood sticks.
Sold.
Wood burner.
Sold.

Now let me show you how easy they are to make! What I can’t do is make this screen scratch and sniff . . . but oh the delicious smell of burning wood would be enough to convince you to do this project. I never thought I would find myself sniffing sticks 😉 #awkward
SUPPLIES TO MAKE NATURAL WOOD PLANT MARKERS
- Natural wood sticks
- Or popsicle sticks, paint stir sticks . . . whatever you want. I found these at Hobby Lobby.
- Wood Burner
- No need to spend much on one with a ton of feature. You just need the basic most inexpensive one, like this. Also found it at Hobby Lobby.
- Pencil
- If you want to trace the lettering on first.

HOW TO MAKE NATURAL WOOD PLANT MARKERS
If you are worried about making big mistakes, write the lettering onto your sticks before hand with a pencil.
Once your wood burner is heated up sufficiently, use light even pressure to burn the lettering into the wood.
Take a big sniff to enjoy the burning wood smell.
If you mess up a bit, just embrace the rustic organic look of these plant markers. You could even get the kids to help you!
Now wasn’t that so easy?!

Love this idea Cami! Thanks so much for it. I am going to make these this weekend to put in our pots at our new house. I also plan on making them with my kids as a “I’m so bored now that school it out” project. Keep the great ideas coming and don’t worry that you are moving to a rental. You are so creative that I’m sure you will be able to still come up with sooooo many ideas to share with those of us that want to create a beautiful and lovely home but need ideas from others like yourself in order to achieve that goal. Regarding social media– Honestly, I really don’t do any of it. I don’t have Facebook, rarely go to Pinterest or Instagram unless directed there by a blogpost. I have a busy life. Reading a few blogs that come in my email inbox is a relaxing pleasure when I have time. Doing more would keep me on the computer for hours each day. What’s the difference between that and TV all day?
I hope you, and bloggers in general don’t end up pressured to do more than you want to. The stress of keeping up with all of those different media presences, along with editing, photographing, dealing with technical problems, could mean that you end up spending 75% of your time doing the unfun stuff. Think about why you started blogging, and what you love to do, and do more of that. Ultimately those social platforms might be fun , but they really exist to sell ads, so if you’re doing it because you feel you have to, “just say no!”
