DIY Boys Old Fashioned Linen Shirt and Pants

I made this darling linen button up shirt, pants and suspenders for my little boy for his baptism day! Get the patterns and inspiration to make your own.

It’s a bit of a tradition for me to make my kiddos a mostly white, new church outfit when they turn 8 and get baptized into our church.

It is such a special day for all of us and it just felt right to me to create this tradition. I may be too sentimental but their grandmother makes all their infant baby blessing/christening outfits, so I love the idea that mom makes them their baptism outfits.

Perhaps some day they will play a part in making their own wedding outfits. A mama can dream, right?

For my last two kiddos I had decided to make the entire outfit out of pure 100% linen – my fabric of choice! I’ll have to share my daughters dress another day, but today I wanted to share what I sewed up for my sweet boy – the youngest of the fam.

I simply adore a bit of an old fashioned look, and linen fabric seems to suit that style as well. So I equipped the boy with some linen trousers, a buttoned up shirt with a mandarin collar of sorts, and a set of homemade linen suspenders.

None of which stopped him from climbing anything and everything on our photo shoot.

But oh, he looked so adorable!!!

For all my girls I actually created the patterns and sewed their dresses from my own imagination.

You can catch glimpses of their dresses here and here. I love to display their outfits in there room, like you can see here.

But I opted to use patterns for the boys outfit, because I am a little more intimidated about sewing shirts and pants. Dresses are easy and I’m well versed it that world after having 3 girls!

PATTERNS FOR BOYS SHIRT, PANTS AND SUSPENDERS

I’m happy to share my sources for where I purchased patterns to create this outfit.

The patterns were all found on Etsy.

  • Boys Pants
  • Suspenders

WHERE DO I BUY MY LINEN FABRIC?

I’m often asked where I buy my linen fabric. My most frequent source is at fabric-store.com.

I used the softened heavy weight fabric in C422 for both the top and bottom. This is the white linen and this is the natural colored linen fabric I used. You could get away with their lighter IL019 weights for clothes, but I wanted this outfit to have a great deal of substance and to last on display for many many years.

I know I don’t share a ton of sewing inspiration on this TIDBITS blog, but it is absolutely one of my favorite hobbies – especially when I get to sew with linen. Would you like to see more sewing inspiration and tutorials? I’d love to know your thoughts!

You may want to cruise the sewing index of my blog to find some great projects to get you sewing! I know I have felt an itch to do more! It is a skill that sure comes in handy for home decor and clothes.

Thanks for reading today! I had fun sharing my sweet little boy and his old fashioned linen outfit!

That is such a handsome outfit, he looks so nice and congratulations on the baptism. Back when my boys were little I made those [little John} outfits, that the Kennedy’s had for their son. They were easy and cute. I love to sew but, just make pillow covers, curtains and simple things out of linen from the fabric store online, love their material. Your children are so cute.

Thank you Marlene! I loved hearing about what you used to create for your boys. Admittedly, I haven’t sewn much for my boy (dresses are super fun for my girls!) but after making this for him I want to do more so bad! Little vintage outfits on boys are just beyond precious! I love their linen too! It’s amazing and the most affordable I’ve seen. Take care!

Cami, I just love the outfit you made for his baptism. You did an amazing job!! The linen from Fabric Store is my favorite and I always have a stash of it here–it sews like butter.

Hi Cami, I just think your son looks adorable. What a gorgeous outfit and so cool of course, you cannot beat linen for that alone. I would love to see more sewing, its something everyone should be able to do. Thankyou for sharing, it took me back a few years and I enjoyed it.x

Thank you so much for that feedback Janette! I would love to share more sewing stuff, but I fear it is not what people want from me. Perhaps I’ll take a gamble and do more to hopefully inspire more of it! I agree, I think it is such a good skill for everyone to have and so enjoyable!
