I have a bit of an obsession with flannel this year. I love how cozy the pattern and the touch of the fabric feels. They make such a lovely variety of flannel fabrics these days, I knew I needed to find a way to use it in my Fall decor. This Fall flannel table runner was a super quick, “no-sew” way to add texture and pattern to our outdoor porch table.
All I did was cut it to size and pull threads to fray the edges. I’ll show you more detailed instructions and tips below, but first, here is a bigger glance at part of our front porch Fall Decor.
The colors in the flannel inspired the clippings I found to accent the space.
I also played around with another piece of flannel with different colors for a second look to this space. You can see the other look, HERE.
Here is the other side of our Fall porch decor, where I’ve used flannel in a throw blanket. I just can’t get enough 😉 (See more images, HERE).

Now, let me show you how easy it is to make a flannel table runner.
You might like the idea of using this same method to make a flannel scarf – inspired by my adorable little 4 year old.
All you will need is a cut of flannel long enough for the table you’ll be decorating, and some scissors.
After you’ve measure and figured the size you will need, it works best for the frayed edge to rip, rather than cut your edging. Snip just an inch or so into the fabric to begin with.
Then proceed to rip your fabric. Flannel is a woven fabric and will rip evenly in a straight line where you tear.
I suggest snipping in a ways on all 4 sides and leaving a teared edge. This will make pulling your threads easier and give a nice frayed look to begin with.
Then, on each ripped edge, continue to pull lengthwise threads completely off until you have the fray you desire.
Trim down any threads that are sticking out more than you like.
Do this for all 4 sides of your table runner (or scarf) and that is really all there is to it!
I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial and that you’ll be inspired to cozy-up your space with flannel for the season!
