It was time to add some garage curb appeal to our new pole barn home. In this process post, we’ve added our steel siding, steel roofing, painted our garage doors with exterior paint, added light fixtures, and more. Let me show you!

I am learning that even the mere thought of curb appeal on a new home build can be extremely overwhelming.  We are pretty much staring at piles of dirt here. But we are taking it one baby step at a time, starting with the front of our garage exterior.  I’d love to show you what we have done so far and share some exterior garage design ideas with you.

It is such a blessing for me to have this post and video sponsored by The Home Depot, as part of their 2019 Paint Program.  We have definitely used paint for this project to bring in some unique color to our garage doors. I will share all those details with you as well as tell you about paint selection tools and trends that make choosing a color much easier for what is sometimes a very overwhelming job.

There are a couple of reasons why we are turning our focus on the exterior of the home.

  1. Winter is coming
  2. The front of our detached garage in particular is the first thing you pull up to and see from the road.  Perhaps not ideal, but was the best solution for this spot of land.

Even if it is just a garage, I hope to make it a lovely view.

A little about our siding and roofing.  We opted for steel roofing and steel siding for their longevity and low maintenance features.  This white siding is bent and formed into a vertical batten treatment, which I find to be lovely and classic.

The steel roofing is in a shade combining blue/green and gray and changes tones drastically throughout the day and according to the weather.  It is so fun to watch.

If you want to hear more about our siding and roofing, let me know and I can do a more detailed post if there is any interest.

Garage Exterior Before

While things slowly progressed on our house this garage front sat unfinished for way too long, due to the rest of our delivery being greatly delayed, and contractors not showing up when they say they will – a constant problem that we seem to be facing as we assume the role of the general contractors for our own home.

But from my chats with other home builders, this tends to be a common problem. My husband eventually hired some buddies to help him get it done himself. We also added some trim around the garage door stalls and prepped for the concrete driveway.

Garage Doors

Let me tell you a bit about my garage door style decision.  My husband was shocked to silence when I picked one of the most affordable, basic garage door styles.  We constantly joke that usually what I want is hard to find, hard to get, and expensive. We are learning a lot of compromising skills.

We opted to try out a very basic flush panel garage door style.  No windows, no custom carriage house details, just very very basic.

I felt with a little bit of paint and ingenuity, we could make this door style look refined, minimalistic, and be slightly different from every other standard garage door that you often see in new homes.

Paint Product

Let’s discuss the paint product we used.  We selected this Behr Ultra Exterior Paint in a Satin finish – with help from my little shoppers.

I choose this one specifically because it mentioned many exterior applications including garage doors.

We’ve had a great experience with Behr Exterior paints in the past, so I didn’t hesitate to use it again.

Garage Door Color

When the challenge came from Home Depot to create a space using one of Behr’s 2020 color trends from their curated palette, I was delighted to see the color “LIGHT DRIZZLE”, which is lovely shade of soft blue/gray.  Around my parts, we call this color tone, “TIDBITS blue”.

It’s one of my favorites and I knew it would be fun to play with on our garage exterior, and be a perfect companion to the white on the house and the green in nature . . . which we should have more of once we landscape in the Spring.

I played around with some different tints of this color and ended up opting for the full tint.

The Home Depot Online Interactive Paint Tools

I want to be sure you know about the digital tools Home Depot now has to help you select colors for your home.

They have created a fun app called ProjectColor™ where you can try out paint colors in spaces and even take images of your own space to digitally render how that will look in your home.

You can color match from images you take or find online, as well as source trending colors you might find on Pinterest or elsewhere.

It’s really an incredible tool and really fun to play with. Even my kids enjoy it!

Paint Process

After I purchased the paint and supplies from The Home Depot, we got all prepped to paint the garage doors and the entry door.

We pulled out our airless paint sprayer to make the job very easy.  It also helped that the Behr paint we selected was a paint and primer in one.

Decor

Once the doors and trim were painted and installed – then my fun part began – decorating.

We installed light fixtures around the doors.

We installed some champagne bronze hardware to add a special detail to our otherwise basic doors.

Then I took advantage of some off-season sales on some evergreen plants, which we will keep potted through the winter and plant in the Spring. They would look a lot better set on concrete – but I couldn’t help myself from trying to make it look a little homey now.

Reveal

I’d love to know what you think about our new and improved garage curb appeal design details.  Let’s chat in the comments below! It’s so rewarding to check this project off our list and shift our focus to the interior of the home and get it ready for us to move in. It won’t be “done” for a long time yet, but we are trying to get a bathroom, most of a kitchen, and flooring down so we can move in and take our time on the rest.

You might also be interested to watch our plans for dreaming our 25 acres of property, that we have fallen in love with and can’t wait to call it home.

I’m also anxious to add my garage storage cabinets to the inside of this space! So glad we made those in our rental home so we had them ready for this home.

Thank you so much for watching and reading.  Be sure to follow me along to watch our home come together and for more inspiration for do-it-yourself living.

  1. When it comes to painting your front door, there are a million colors to choose from but only one real option for the finish. Semigloss paint gives you a smoother surface than lower-sheen finishes and has a degree of shine, providing a visual contrast 🙂

  2. Thank you so much for this! I’m hoping to do something very similar. How did you get the batten look with metal siding? I definitely want metal for the longevity but love the board & batten style. Congrats on your beautiful garage!

  3. Your building is beautiful. All of the materials used to build my motorcycle garage were purchased from Home Depot. It is insulated, has a through-the-wall air conditioner/heater so I can keep my Harley clean while being comfortable.

  4. Okay … late to this party, but I have to let you know that I. Love. Your. Garage. Front!!! Seriously!! The colors are so appealing. And, if it takes a couple of potted evergreens on gravel to make your heart happy, then so be it. I think they look great there.

Oh, and contractors?! You can’t live with or without them. :/

We are sure hoping the snow holds off a bit longer, as it will make things more difficult. 3 more weeks, if all goes well! Send prayers! Hugs!

    1. Such an eye for detail you have!! ha! Yes, it is a warm and cold water spigot. Running through the sprinklers will be so warm 😉 . Thank you so much for following us along on this adventure Susan! I sure appreciate your support.

  10. Love it – I never would have considered this color combo for a garage but it works and looks great.

What is hanging on the exterior wall to the left of the door below the sconce above the plant?

    1. I was wondering the same thing. I scrolled back up and expanded the pic. It looks to be an outdoor faucet, both hot and cold. What a fantastic design and a great idea.

    2. Yes, the color combo is quite unique! We had a light snowfall the other day and it looked so perfectly winter wonderland dreamy! Ah, and good eye. It is a water spigot for cold and hot water. It will be so awesome to have right there!
