What is Culinary Lavender?

I should say – you can eat food grade or culinary lavender. There are hundreds of types of lavender, but not all are culinary varieties. Culinary lavender varieties are suitable for use in food due to their good flavor profiles and lack of harmful compounds.

Most culinary varieties are found in the more common English Lavender varieties or the Lavendula Angustafolia plants. While there are dozens and dozens of varieties within this type of English lavender, most if not all are culinary – because they are sweeter and less “soapy”.

Where to Buy Culinary Lavender for Recipes

If you purchase lavender for use in recipes, make sure that it is meant for culinary purposes. You might be lucky enough to find culinary lavender at your local supermarket near the spices.

Mountain Rose Herbs sells some great culinary English Lavender. You can also order food grade lavender from Amazon as well.
