I’ve been having fun decorating my home for Christmas using a pretty linen ribbon. Ribbon decoration is a simple and affordable way to bring color and texture to your seasonal decor. So, let me share with you 5 ideas for decorating your home for the holidays with ribbon.

There are dozens of types and colors of ribbon you could play with. Some of my favorites are velvet, silk or satin, and grosgrain ribbon.

But my current obsession is this ribbon I actually make myself from 100% pure linen fabric.

WHERE TO BUY LINEN RIBBON

I adore the rustic frayed edging, the nubby texture, and the quant homemade look of linen ribbon. I get this look from carefully ripping and trimming my own linen fabric. You can do the same, or I have just started selling my linen ribbon in my TIDBITS Linen shop!

How to Decorate with Ribbons

Incorporating ribbon decoration into your holiday decor is rather simple. Let me show you 5 ways to decorate with ribbon for the holiday season!

1) Hang it from your wreaths

Adding ribbons into a wreath is such a classic idea. It’s a great way to bring a splash of color to compliment the greenery.

I was given two fresh cedar wreaths from Lynch Creek Farms, and I opted for just the basic ones without any embellishments. I wanted to add my own touches with my linen ribbon.

You can tie bows, but I thought it was really pretty to simply loop a strand of 2-inch linen ribbon around the command hook that holds my wreath, and let it hang down.

I also added a swag of vintage bells to the center of this wreath.  It’s really simple, super pretty, and the texture of the ribbon adds so much.

This ribbon is the color “Black Cherry”, and is in fact my self proclaimed “color of the year” for my Christmas decor.

I love the deep red color tone and it feels very Old World European, which fits the decor style I am after for our new home.

I also hung a cedar wreath on the inside of our side door, so we could enjoy the look and smell from inside.

For this one, I used a 3-inch strip of my “black as night” linen ribbon and hung a brass horn. Again, just super sweet and simple and full of texture.

2) Hang ribbon and bows on your tree

There are a few different ways to decorate a Christmas tree with a ribbon.

We cut our tree down from the mountains, and once I added these ribbon bows, it just felt so complete.

I just think the linen ribbon bows with their long tails are so old-world charming. I absolutely adore them!

Another idea is to opt for a big ribbon bow at the top of your tree in place of a star if you want to.

3) Hang a bow from your stockings

It makes another sweet touch to your stocking if you tie a little bow to the top.

I’ve done small bows before and ones with long tails.

Either way, it is a super cute addition to those stockings hung on the mantel.

4) Use ribbon on your gift boxes

My favorite gift wrap is a simple brown paper package tied with ribbon. It is a charming and inexpensive way to wrap gifts and really lets the color of the ribbon shine.

Here is something I’ve done the last few years for the gifts under our family tree: we use re-usable boxes tied with ribbon for our gifts.

It really cuts down on your need for buying wrapping paper and prevents that explosion of wrapping paper mess on Christmas morning, and you can re-use them year after year.

To go with our old-world European Christmas this year, I ordered some black boxes and tied them with linen ribbon.

Then we used some simple package toppers like dried orange slices or fresh greenery.

I have to tell you, it feels super special unwrapping a gift in such a beautiful box tied with such a beautiful ribbon. My kids love it!

5) Just place ribbon or bows anywhere you want a splash of Holiday color

You can tie bows around doorknobs, light fixtures, the back of chairs, or wherever!

I felt like I had too much greenery already, but wanted something on my antique blanket hutch.

I just tied a sweet little ribbon on the handles and called it good.

Walk around your home and see if there is a quaint spot for a ribbon bow, and have fun adding the color of your choice.
