I told you I’d be back after we had slept in our Savvy Rest Organic Mattress for at least 3 months – so here I am, ready to talk about the pros and cons of this mattress from our experience sleeping on it so far.
Getting a new mattress is a huge investment in a home, and I often rely heavily on reviews of others to help me decide what would be best for us.
After sleeping on this mattress for 3 months now, I feel like I have enough thoughts on it to share with you – should the time come when you are ready to invest in your own mattress. I certainly hope what I have to share is helpful.
*As a disclaimer, we were gifted this mattress from Savvy Rest in order to do this review, but my opinions are my own. You can use the coupon code “TIDBITS” to save 20% on your purchase at Savvy Rest.
Why we Choose a Savvy Rest Organic Latex Mattress
I want to share why buying an organic mattress is something you might want to consider in the first place. There is a lot to unpack there, and I actually did another very detailed post on that if you want to check that out.
To sum it up, you may want to consider an organic mattress because:
1 – They can be better for your health by decreasing chemical off-gassing in your home that can come from other mattresses made from chemicals and synthetic ingredients.
2 – Organic latex is super comfortable and conforms to the body.
3 – Organic mattresses are more sustainable and made from natural materials. The latex from Savvy Rest is made from the sap of the rubber tree, it is harvested much like syrup, whipped and baked and looks like a delectable slice of angel food cake.
4 – Organic latex is very durable and this one investment can last you up to 20 years – which is amazing for a mattress. Especially when I considered our need to update our memory foam mattresses about every 3-4 years, because of the permanent dipping that would leave our backs in so much discomfort.
That about sums up the why’s for us.
What Customizable Latex Layers and Mattress Topper did we Choose?
I would like to make sure I am clear on what Savvy Rest products we picked, so you know exactly what items I am reviewing and have experience with.
We selected the:
Because my husband likes a more firm mattress and I like it sink-in-soft, we were able to customize the sides to suit each of our preferences. Here is what we picked:
OUR SELECTED LAYERS FOR OUR SAVVY MATTRESS:
HIS SIDE (LISTED TOP TO BOTTOM)
- SOFT DUNLOP
- FIRM DUNLOP
- FIRM DUNLOP
HER SIDE (LISTED TOP TO BOTTOM)
- MEDIUM TALALAY
- MEDIUM DUNLOP
- FIRM DUNLOP
Both sides are topped with the Vitality topper, which was recommended to us because we both suffer from a bit of pressure point pain and because our bodies were used to more give, since we had been on memory foam mattresses for so long.
To be clearer for you – The Serenity mattress is 3 layers of natural latex (according to your preferences), and it is wrapped in a very substantial organic cotton casing. It looks like a traditional mattress but with natural latex rather than memory foam or springs
The Vitality topper is their softest layer of Talalay foam, wrapped in an organic knit encasement – which allows for more give to the body. If you’ve had a memory foam topper before – it will look much the same – but performs quite a bit differently.
Our Thoughts on the Savvy Rest Organic Mattress. Is it Comfortable?
The products that we have selected is hands down – the most comfortable mattress we have ever slept on. I can say that with full confidence.
It is an absolute dream and no fancy hotel or other expensive memory foam mattress we have ever bought compares to the comfort level of the serenity plus the vitality. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend what we have to my dearest friends and family – and of course – my followers who trust me!
My favorite aspects would have to be:
1 – How it gives and curves to our bodies so gently, relieving years of pressure point pain. I really wish I would have had this mattress when I was pregnant 4 times.
2 – I love how It bounces right back the next day and retains its shape.
3 – It has a really nice natural smell and doesn’t irritate me. Also, the latex material is very breathable, and when paired with our linen sheets – our body temp is regulated very well.
4 – I can hardly feel him move about on his side, and yet we can’t tell that there is a split of the foam down the middle at all. It’s so nice.
5 – I don’t have that morning congestion like I used to. I’ve tried to decide if I am making this up, but it was standard routine for me to need to get up and blow my nose first thing in the morning and relieve some of the congestion. I just don’t need to do that anymore, and I can’t tell what made the difference besides the possible switch of our memory foam mattress to the Savvy Rest.
What we Don’t Like About the Savvy Rest Organic Mattress
If there was anything I could say I don’t love about the Savvy Rest mattress we have, it would be that I likely wouldn’t love it as much without the topper.
We tried the serenity for a while without the topper and both of us felt it was too firm – and I even had a soft plush top layer. I think that thick cotton encasement is so substantial that it doesn’t quite allow for as much give as we like.
I do wonder if we hadn’t been so accustomed to the feel of memory foam and how that forms to our bodies, that we would have adapted better to the serenity without the topper. And I wonder if you like more of a firm, supportive feel – the serenity would be enough.
But once we added that topper, it was magic. We sleep good, we don’t hurt when we wake up, and I look forward to crawling into that comfy cloud of a bed every night.
That said, I don’t like that my highest recommendation comes with another added product to create the perfect mattress, but I just really like the combo with the topper.
Perhaps the worst thing about it is that it is really hard to want to get out of bed in the morning!
The only other negative I could think about for this mattress is that it is heavy! The material is so substantial that you need really good support underneath – which we did build into our DIY upholstered bed.
Also, because it is so heavy, you’ll likely need help to move it anywhere. It can even be difficult when you need to lift the layers to make the bed. It is just solid and substantial – so know that going forward.
My biggest tip would be to unbox each layer directly on to your bed and don’t try to assemble it all on the floor and move it afterwards. We did make that mistake and had to disassemble and try again.
I guess the good side of this would be that should you have to move the mattress, you can disassemble the layers one at a time and make it much easier to do with little help.
Do I recommend getting just the Savvy Rest Vitality Topper?
I have been asked if just getting the topper would be something I recommend.
I would say, if you are considering a topper because your current mattress is uncomfortable or giving you trouble – I think this would be a great topper to go with.
If you want to switch to organic bedding for all the health reasons, but can’t afford a whole new mattress – if you can only get the topper I think that would be great too! At least what your body is resting on is organic.
But if you want to completely overhaul your bedding situation to make it completely organic and eliminate as much off gassing as possible – you’ll want to save up for a new mattress and the topper for maximum comfort – as well as looking at your sheets, pillows and protectors and making sure they are organic. By the way – Savvy Rest has all of that as well.
I see it as a kind of good, better, best situation where even doing the minimum is better than nothing.
Last question I want to address for this review –
Is the Savvy Rest Organic Mattress Worth the Cost?
It’s true, organic mattresses are expensive – all across the board. It’s just the same with organic food, clothes – you name it.
In my mind, I make those swaps when I can see long term benefits.
Will eating more homegrown and organic foods save me on health care cost in the long run – very possible.
Will organic bedding improve my health? Possible, but it gets even better when you weigh the warranties and lifespan of organic latex.
A little more now for a mattress that will last me 20 years with a 20 year warranty is a major perk and selling point for me. If I take care of it and protect it, I shouldn’t have to get another mattress until I am 58! Even if I just want to replace the topper sooner, I see big savings in 20 years time.
There ya have it – my unfiltered thoughts on Savvy Rest Organic mattresses.
