Supplies and Ingredients for Homemade Pizza Dough
Supplies
- A large mixing bowl and spoon or a stand mixer with a dough hook
- Damp tea towel, plastic wrap or reusable bowl cover
- Pizza stone, skillet, or pan
Ingredients
- 1 cup lukewarm water
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon honey
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 ¼-½ cups of freshly milled whole wheat flour
- 1 tablespoon of cornmeal (optional)

How to Make this Whole Grain Pizza Crust Recipe
Activate Yeast
Pour the warm water into a large bowl and add the yeast to the water. Stir slightly and let sit for 10 minutes to activate the yeast.
Mixing the Dough
Add to the water and yeast mixture the honey, oil, and salt. Mix these ingredients together until well incorporated.
Add your flour, one measuring cup at a time, until your dough can form into a ball. Start at 2 cups and then see how much more you need to add. Knead the dough for at least 5 minutes, to help develop the gluten structure.

First Rise
Oil your bowl, roll your dough ball in the oil, and cover with plastic wrap or a moist tea towel.
Let the dough rise until doubled. This usually takes about an hour at room temperature, but you can speed it up by placing it in a warm area of your home or inside the oven with the light on.

Shaping the Pizza Crust
Oil a pizza stone or sheet pan. Sprinkle cornmeal over the entire surface of the pan. This is optional, but it helps your pizza not to stick to the pan while adding a delicious texture to the crust.
Gently remove the dough from the bowl and place on top of the pan. Using a rolling pin, roll out into a large circle shape, as thick or as thin as you desire. Pinch the edges to form a small crust edge.

You could also divide the dough into small pieces and make a bunch of mini pizzas (my kids love this!).
Second Rise
Cover the dough again and let rise slightly. You should only need about 15-20 minutes.
Baking Instructions
When ready to bake, preheat your oven to 400 degrees fahrenheit.
You can bake 2 ways:
1 – Add your sauce and toppings directly onto the uncooked dough, then bake for about 15-20 minutes, until the crust is completely cooked through.
2 – Bake just your crust for 5 minutes, remove from the oven, and add your sauce and toppings. Put back into the oven for 10-15 minutes until the cheese is melted to your idea of perfection.
Feel free to put your oven on broil very briefly to get some golden-brown cheese. Yum!

Topping Ideas
Toppings are always the fun part of any pizza! If you like a seasoned crust, you can sprinkle on some garlic salt or dried herbs for an extra flavor boost. Then, add your sauce of choice, mozzarella cheese and favorite pizza toppings.
Around this time of year, I’m thinking some fresh basil, pepperoni and garden tomatoes would be lovely.
Hint: If your kids (or yourself) is picky about vegetables, try blending them into your pizza sauce. Zucchini, spinach and carrots are ideas you can try. Nobody will even notice!

Pizza Dough You Can Freeze!
Want to have some pizza dough premade? It’s a great last minute dinner option.
Avoid the frozen pizza section of the grocery store by freezing this whole grain crust and pulling it out in a moment’s notice. Freeze little bags of shredded cheese and pepperoni while you’re at it, and anyone can whip up a pizza in no time.
To freeze: Flash bake your crust for 5 minutes and then let cool completely. Once cooled, wrap with a couple layers of plastic wrap or put inside a freezer bag. They will freeze great for a few months.
