I’ve had the vision of this multi-purpose wagon in my head for some time now after seeing this picture. It’s so nice to have it be reality. Summer activities will be much improved because of it.
It’s perfect to haul kids to the park for a picnic, and will be a dream come family reunion and camping time. How hard is it with a baby to find places for naps several times a day when you are away from home? Now if baby will cooperate, we won’t have that problem any more.
With a swinging door, I won’t have to worry about kids trying to climb in and out and tipping the whole thing over. Relief.
And of course, I had to add a cute covered cushion and coordinating cozy pillows. Perfect for dirty little feet to relax in.
I will be showing you how to make the yellow pillow in another coming post, but the other pillow ideas came from V and Co. Am I the only one that thinks a wagon needs to be accessorized?
Now, thoughts of this wagon would still be stealing my sleep if it weren’t for my handy dandy hubby. (He really needs a wood shop so my car can have the garage back). I had some pretty difficult requests, and he made them all happen, beautifully.
However, the request to take a lot of pictures so my readers can make their own, was somehow forgotten. I don’t think he gets this blog thing 😉
So instead, I’ll have him insert some instruction here. This makes me very nervous. Don’t judge my blog by any of his possible unusual comments. Just know, with my brain and his skills with the saw, we make a good team.
Take it deary –
Materials needed:
1 front and 1 side panel from a crib
1×4 and 1×6 pine
3 inch carriage bolt
2 2 inch x 1 inch hinges
wood glue
nails (1 inch and 1 1/2)
2 5/8 steel rods
8 inch tires
1 inch steel tube
5/8 push caps
6 inch lazy susan plate bearing
1 1/2 lock slide
For the sides I cut our recalled crib panels in half height wise and placed them around the upper deck. The deck was made with 1×4 pine boards nailed on two supports. The tires and axles were connected to 1×4 pine boards. I used a Lazy Susan bearing plate (found at Home Depot) to make the front tire assemble turn. The handle was made of 1 inch steel tubing and connected to the front axle with a 3 inch carriage bolt. The tires are 8 inch hand truck tires.
That’s enough from me. Back to you, Cami.
Okay. So unless your like Ana White, that probably makes no sense to you. But I hope it helps any of you desirous of this wagon to make it or find a handy person to make it for you.
That would give me a lot more time.
I could go on picnics every day with the girls if I did that.
Naaaa. Interesting thought though.
So, anyone besides my husband think sewing them picnic outfits was a bit much? I couldn’t help myself. Actually, I was lucky enough to already have one for the baby that matched her sisters skirts. Good thing too, I ran out of time and motivation.
Perfect opportunity to take some cute pictures and experiment with photo editing.
Speaking of pictures, I’ve scrimped and saved for months upon months for a DSLR camera. Anybody have suggestions for the best camera I could get for about 600 bucks? This is not a rhetorical question, I would love suggestions if you have any to give.
I never want to have to pay for JCPenny portraits again. That’s my justification.
These cuties deserve so much better. (not that I could really ever do that 🙂
And like I don’t have enough hobbies to keep me busy and the wallet empty.
Hope you have enjoyed looking at my kids. I know the Grandma’s have! Till next time!
Best idea ever! I have a question…from the directions I am guessing that the outside dimensions of the wagon are about the same as a crib, right? And then, is it possible, if you are using one side and one end panel cut down to half size for one wagon, to actually make 2 wagons out of one crib? I am just about to ask someone to make one of these for me and maybe a second one to sell out of an older Jenny Lind crib from the 1980’s. It also had a canopy top so i am thinking maybe of using some of those ribs over just one end of the wagon (pram like design) to provide some shade. Thanks for sharing, for creating, for making us all think of better ways to reuse. I could simply not throw this out.
Thank you for this wonderful idea. I am a grandmama now and have an old baby bed. Was this a smaller crib or baby bed your husband used?
This is so cute and a great idea! And I just love the next step you took which was making a sun protector for the baby. So ingenious to make this into a covered wagon!! And of course, you did it simply! Awesome! Do you mind commenting here(or there) about what your hubby used for supports to hold up the canvas in that curved way? I’m guessing it’s pvc pipe, but I’ll see what you say. Also how was it secured to wagon? Because it’s inside the wagon, I know it has to be something that won’t hurt the baby, but what is that?
Kudo’s to your husband for a job well done!
Couple of questions:
1) how does the hand grip attach to the handle bar?
2) when you say decking, do you mean plywood; maybe 3/4″? Whoops! Lol Again, after a better perusal of pics, I see different width boards, so did you mean that literally as in outside decking planks/boards or what exactly?
3) is the decking the same thing you used as right angle supports for the wheel axle holders?
4)someone asked this already, but since there isn’t an answer yet, I’ll throw it in here: lol what are the dimensions of the finished wagon?
5) did hubby sandwich the spindle portion of crib with the 1 by’s? Wait…after taking better look at pics, he didn’t sandwich. So, can you tell me if the sides feel super secure? I don’t mean that as a criticism 😉 just asking as a true question and one of those:”if I had it to do again, I’d…”
6) the mattress, what is it: foam, memory foam, recycled mattress from something, air?
I know! I’m sorry! But I’m a detailed person! Can’t help myself! Lol 😉
Thanks, again!
Jules 🙂
What are the size dimensions on this?
Congrats on 2nd place, loved this idea! Your girls are soooo pretty!
I love your wagon!! Great idea. I have a Sony Cyber-Shot camera and I love it. It is a full HD 1080 still image. Optical zoom 10x and 8.1 mega pixels. I took it to Vegas Washington DC., and San Antonio, and came back with over 2400 photos. They were beautiful. I also have the Panasonic SDR-H80 video camera. You can probably get both for your $600. Try Best Buy. That's where I bought
I wish I had seen this before my MIL bought my son a plastic wagon… it's adorable and wonderful!!

PS I got a new DSLR camera this spring, it's the BOMB! I have only had 1 professional picture taken (and that was because I had a coupon and it was Easter time and I saved tons of money printing pics). It takes a little time to get use to it, but it's great! I got an
Really Cute Idea. As far as a camera you can get a used or refurbished Nikon D90 for about $600. Its an amazing camera with great iso capabilities. You can shoot in auto or manual and you will never outgrow it.
Just saw the wagon on ohdeedoh! (A favorite stop of mine!) Congrats!
Genius idea! Soooooo adorable.
Desi
This is SO cute & looks like a lot of fun. GREAT idea.
That is awesome!!! I love it! I’m going to feature it sometime next week on my blog!
This is awesome!! Thank you so much for sharing, our "baby" is getting to big for her crib so this is a perfect way to keep it around and in use!! Im adding this to my "Honey-Do" list right now!
I just sent you an email about your camera question. I forgot to ask though… Do you have a rough estimate on how much those supplies cost? I am sooo interested in making this!
I love the pictures of your babes even more than the wagon, so beautiful!! Well done with the crib too.
I am floored! This is beautiful! I can't believe how big your baby is. I remember when you announced you were pregnant! You changed the name of your blog, but the content is still so beautiful! I am featuring this at somedaycrafts.blogspot.com tonight!
I love this wagon!!! I totally voted for you for this project because I thought it was awesome! And your girlies are adorable. I hope you all have fun with this wagon.

This is so incredibly adorable and brilliant!!! Love everything about this wagon!
Amazing job! I'm going to show this to hubby, I need one! The pics are adorable too!
Such beautiful pictures and the wagon is so cool. I too have one of those cribs and have wanted to do something with it since I find it such a waste just throwing it out when the kiddo is done with it. Thanks for sharing this idea with us.
This is such an amazing idea, it looks wonderful! Well done on 2nd place, so well deserved!
the only thing that could improve this is a canopy for the hot sun…I have always wanted a wagon with a canopy on it! Nevertheless, congrats and what a wonderful idea!!
This is the most adorable, practical creation! Love it.
Where was this post 10 years ago when I needed it! This is a fabulous idea and your hubby rocks!

Shared on FJI Facebook for SNS 83. :)

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Funky-Junk-Interiors/175378011140#!/photo.php?fbid=10150258580811141&set=a.192514281140.164586.175378011140&type=1&theater

Donna
