Have you ever tried a roasted dandelion root tea? If not, then you really should. Herbalists love dandelion teas, and for good reason. Dandelion teas are delightful, easy to make and have incredible health benefits!

I’ve got another blog post where I go over many of the wonderful health benefits of dandelion roots. And believe me, it’s a really impressive list!
Today, I want to share my two methods for making a roasted dandelion root tea decoction. It’s a really simple process that you can do in your own kitchen. So, grab some dandelion roots, and let’s get cooking!

As always, please keep in mind that I am not a healthcare practitioner. Please do your own research and discuss with your doctor any herbal medications or possible side effects that you may be concerned about.
What is a Tea Decoction?
If you are a drinker of herbal teas, then you’re probably familiar with the process of steeping herbs in hot water to create a tea. Tea decoctions are similar.
Decoction is a method used to extract the medicinal properties and beneficial compounds from the root of a plant. During this method, the roots are simmered in water for an extended period of time to create a more concentrated mixture then you would get with steeping. It’s a sort of super-charged tea that is oh, so good for you.
In these roasted dandelion root tea recipes, we’ll be making a decoction out of our roasted dandelion roots for maximum goodness. You can make this with non-roasted dandelion roots as well. The flavor of non-roasted dandelion root tea will have a slightly nutty/bitter taste. You can of course add sweeteners of your choice to enhance the flavor.
Roasted dandelion roots will produce a toasty/caramelized and robust flavor. Many people find roasted dandelion root tea to be a good coffee substitute. It’s caffeine free, low in calories and full of nutrients, so drink up!
Where to Get Roasted Dandelion Roots?
Dandelions are pretty easy to find. They are a very common weed. If you’re like me, then you’ve probably got some dandelion weeds growing in your own yard! But if not, it’s still easy to get ahold of dandelion products.
My favorite herb supply retailer is Mountain Rose Herbs. They sell both roasted dandelion root and non-roasted dandelion root. You can also find roasted dandelion root tea supplies from other retailers like amazon.
If you want more information about how to harvest your own dandelions, check out my blogpost where I discuss all the specifics of dandelion harvesting. If you do harvest your own dandelions, just be sure that the dandelion plants and/or surrounding areas have never been treated with pesticides or herbicides.
How to Roast Dandelion Roots
Let’s talk roasting for those who wish to roast their own dandelion roots. The roasting process is very straightforward.
- First, wash and scrub your dandelion roots to free them from any dirt. I usually have to take a forceful hose sprayer to it, and then also scrub them in the sink with a clean scrub brush.
- Chop up your dandelion roots into approximately 1/2-inch pieces.
- You can let these air dry first, or put them directly into the over to dry and roast.
- Spread the dried or fresh dandelion root pieces out on a baking sheet
- Roast in the oven at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for 30-45 minutes, depending on the thickness and dryness of your dandelion roots. Stir them around halfway through cooking time.
Note: Once the dandelion roots are done roasting, they should feel thoroughly dry.
At this point, you can proceed straight to making tea, or you can store your roasted dandelion roots for later use. Store your roasted dandelion root in an airtight container away from direct sunlight, and be sure to label them.
Roasted Dandelion Root Tea Methods
I’ve got two ways for you to brew up your dandelion root tea decoction. The first method will be using the good ‘ol stove top. The second method is done in the Instant Pot or electric pressure cooker.
The stove top and Instant Pot methods differ slightly in the amount of water and roasted dandelion root that they use. My stove top recipe is designed for a single serving, but you can scale it up if you wish. The Instant Pot recipe makes multiple servings, which you can store in the fridge for later use.
Keep in mind that the stove top method uses a greater root-to-water ratio, because some of the water evaporates during the simmering process. The stove top method will also produce a milder flavor than the Instant Pot method.
Electric Pressure cookers are great at extracting flavors, so this method will produce a stronger dandelion tea. The process is similar to what you saw in my Pressure Cooker Pumpkin Spice Crio Bru or Pressure Cooker Peppermint Crio Bru recipes where the high-pressure cooking method is used to infuse extra flavor into the finished product.
Either cooking method will work well here, so just choose your favorite. I’ve included a printable recipe card for both versions at the end of this blog post.
