Let’s talk about the BOROUX water filter, a fairly new name in water filtration. I’ll share what I’ve learned from investigating this new company, including my recommendations for those looking for a water filter system.

Here is something you may not know about me: I’m a huge fan of gravity-fed water filters and have been for years. Read Is the Berkey Water Filter Worth It and Berkey Water Filter Review to see what I’m talking about.

In a nutshell, I can’t go back to regular tap water after seeing how much cleaner and healthier filtered water is. I’ve had testing done with Tapscore on my water both before and after filtering to prove its effectiveness and it’s a shocking difference! (Seriously, see my independent test results for actual performance numbers!)

When we tested the water here at the Lavender Blue Cottage, we found high levels of lead and other heavy metals. It wasn’t surprising, given the age of our home’s pipes and the fact that we get water from multiple sources, but still a cause for concern. Luckily, I have a great water filter and have recently found a new and exciting purchase option that I want to share with you today.

Why Have a Water Filtration System?

We probably all know that our drinking water is supposed to be pure, but in reality, there are lots of potential contaminates that sneak their way into our water. Contaminates can come from the source of our water or from the plumbing in our homes. Either way, it’s no good.

A gravity fed water filter is a fantastic way to filter out harmful contaminants so that your drinking water can taste better, smell better, and be better for you. These water filters require no electricity (great for emergency preparedness) and can be found in a variety of sizes to fit the needs of your household.

You simply pour tap water into the filter’s top chamber and allow it to pass through the system’s black carbon filters into the lower chamber where clear water waits for you until you’re ready to use it.

Until recently, my family used a Berkey water filter and loved it.

What Happened to Berkey Water Filters?

You may have heard that Berkey water filter systems are no longer around. That’s not entirely true, you can still find them, but they are no longer affiliated with James Enterprise Inc (the parent company of BOROUX and a former major distributor of Berkey products). James Enterprise Inc. formally sold Berkey products under Berkeyfilters.com, which I felt they did such a good job marketing these products that they became a leading distributor.

The split between JEI and Berkey happened back in 2022 when the Berkey company and all its affiliates were issued a Stop Sale or Removal Order from the Environmental Protection agency. The issue? Berkey’s water filters contained silver and claimed to filter out microorganisms, which according to the EPA’s guidelines, means it must be classified as a pesticide.

Of course, no water filter company wants the label of “pesticide” on their product and thus began a lengthy legal battle between Berkey and the EPA. See more details about that process here at The Beginnings of BOROUX.

In the meantime, Berkey products were not being made or distributed, many jobs were being lost, and people weren’t able to purchase an incredible water filter system for their home. This also affected the trust the public used to have in the name “Berkey”, and I’ll admit to wondering myself what was going on and if I had been misled. I felt assurance knowing that our own tests showed they were working for us, but I was uneasy to promote them any more.

JEI decided that rather than fight the EPA over claims, they would manufacture and distribute the BOROUX, a water filter system that used the same technology and process as the Berkey, but that was in compliance with EPA guidelines (meaning that it did not claim to filter out microorganisms).

BOROUX filters still contain silver, a natural antimicrobial agent, to prevent the product from degrading itself, but no longer claim to filter out microorganisms. Same quality standards, just an alteration to claims about microorganisms.

BOROUX VS Berkey

BOROUX and Berkey are both gravity-fed countertop water filters. Both feature black carbon filters, which use a specialized blend of carbon to trap tiny particles and molecules of impurities from your drinking water. Both also feature an easy-to-use spigot and a sleek, no mess/no spills design.

What’s different, aside from the claims about filtering microorganisms, is that BOROUX is now both the manufacturer and distributor of BOROUX water filters. That gives them more control over product testing, certifications, product improvements, and delivery. From my experience, their transparency and information has been even more exceptional than my previous experiences with Berkey.

Why I’ve Loved the BOROUX Water Filter

BOROUX water filter systems are rigorously tested, which I love. Their black filters have been shown to filter out heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides and chemicals. They are made with high quality workmanship and materials. Not to mention, I selected a white outer chamber, which is totally swoon-worthy. It is still made of stainless steel, but the outside only is coated. This is another perk of BOROUX being their own manufacturer. You can get the BOROUX in white, black, or stainless.

The white feels perfect for our cottage kitchen, and even the packaging is gorgeous!

The BOROUX company is also super transparent and answered every question I had. Here are links to the sources of information I’ve shared with you today:

BOROUX has got great customer service, dedicated customer support, and they even sent me a pair of fluoride filters to try. Additionally, BOROUX water filter setup is a snap with easy-to-follow instructions.

And for those who need a cold drink, simply fill a pitcher with filtered water and stick it in your fridge. Easy as pie!

Is Berkey Still a Good Option?

Yes, absolutely! I still love my Berkey, but Berkey water filter products have become more difficult to find through trusted resources since the Stop Sale, Use or Removal Orders of 2022 and 2023. I’ve found the BOROUX company to be super reliable and their products to be readily available and rigorously tested.

If you still have a Berkey water filter and love it, then great! My aim is simply to introduce you to another gravity fed water filtration system option that is EPA compliant, effective and easy to purchase.

One of my favorite things about the BOROUX water filter system is the fact that is uses the same black carbon filter configuration as the Berkey. That means that you can use Berkey and BOROUX products interchangeably.

Got a stainless steel Berkey chamber but just need new replacement filters? You can purchase BOROUX foundation filters and avoid buying an entirely new shell. More options, more convenience!
