POST UPDATE: We tested our Berkey water with an independent laboratory. Here are my results and what I think of the Berkey after testing our water.
1) Berkey Removes Contaminants from Your Drinking Water
I first got the Berkey because I noticed our city water was often cloudy, and out of state visitors would complain about the taste of our water.
Then I started to read up on what kinds of things the city put into our water, and I decided I did not want that in our bodies.
Berkey has a huge list of contaminants and elements that it filters out, and it leaves you with delicious, drinkable freshwater.
2) It Works for On-the-Go Lifestyles and for at home
Then the Berkey really came in handy while we lived in our RV and were drinking out of hose water which tasted terrible.
I was so grateful to have it because there was no way we could have had room to store bottled water.
Now in our new home, we are on well water which also has a small amount of iron and other natural elements in it that don’t make our water taste so great.
Again, I rely on this for fresh and clean water. I would say, unless you have a really robust complete home filter system, whether you are on well water, city water or whatever, a Berkey is so great to have.
3) Helps You Be Prepared for Emergencies
It’s also wonderful as an emergency preparedness item, because if traditional water sources aren’t available, you can filter almost any water with this and it is safe to drink.
4) Helps My Sourdough Starter!
Additionally, I love having it so I can feed my sourdough starter. A starter won’t stay alive if you are feeding it with water that has chlorine in it, which city water usually does.
5) The Water Filter is Stylish
If you are on the market for one, there are many water filters to choose from, but I feel like the Berkey is the most stylish and it doesn’t offend my design eyes to have it on the counter.
In fact, I think it looks quite nice, and sits out to remind me to drink water!
6) Room temperature water is great for your digestive system!
I’ve had friends ask me if I don’t like not having cold water to drink. We absolutely love drinking room temp water, and if you take a minute to research it, cold water is actually a bit stressful on the digestive system.
I drink way more water when it is not ice cold anyway and my kids don’t know any different. We do have ice, for those hot summer days if needed.
7) Save on buying bottled water
The water filters are made with top quality materials like stainless steel. The replaceable parts in the filters last three and a half years for us, so we drank lots of clean water in that timeframe! I say Berkey is absolutely worth the money because the products last, and we have peace of mind knowing that we are drinking water without contaminants.

Common Questions about the Berkey Water Filter
Buy as big as your space will allow and the one that holds enough water for you to consume on a daily basis.
Use a brand new clean sponge or scrubbing brush and running water. Never use a dirty sponge as it will introduce bacteria to your elements and never use soap to avoid plugging them up with contaminates.
Buy from their scratch and dent sales, buy a used Berkey and replace with new filter elements, or use the coupon code “TIDBITS” on a new purchase.
We have the Royal Berkey, which works perfectly for our family of 6.
We used the plastic spigot for years and didn’t mind it. But once we upgraded and got the metal spigot, it has been much preferred. It looks very nice and handles nicely.
With 2 filters in your Berkey and filling it daily, Berkey website suggests 3 years lifespan on your filters. After using ours for 3 years, we felt confirmed on that, as we began to notice they didn’t filter as well after 3.5 years.
This will likely depend on how contaminated the water you are filtering is. You will notice the elements don’t filter the water as quickly or as completely and you will know when to clean the filters.
