Plate of Orange Ginger stir fry with chicken, rice and vegetables

My kids are pretty healthy eaters, but I still find myself on a never-ending quest to find more ways to get them to eat vegetables.  And honestly, the same goes for myself and Mr. Tidbits.  Yes, we want healthy, nourishing food, but it also needs to taste great.  Who can relate?

That’s why I’m sharing my Healthy Stir Fry Recipe with a killer Orange Ginger Sauce.  This recipe is a tried-and-true family favorite.  It’s got delicious meat, amazing sauce, filling grains and healthy vegetables.  Best of all, the kids and adults all love it!

Stir Fry Basics

I love a good stir fry recipe, don’t you?  Stir fries are quick, tasty and endlessly adaptable.   A stir fry is a simple dish which basically includes small pieces of fried meat and vegetables served over a grain and topped with some kind of sauce.  The meat and vegetables get cooked quickly over high heat while they get stirred around and fried (hence the name stir fry) in a small amount of oil.

I think stir fries make great dinner options for home cooks because it’s a “use what you got” type of meal.  It’s real-life cooking.  Have you got half of a leftover pepper?  One lonely stalk of celery?  Some carrots that nobody wants anymore?  They can all be combined into a delicious, healthy stir fry recipe.  You can mix and match meats, veggies, grains and sauce into whatever combination you choose.  What’s not to love about that?

What Meat is Great in a Stir Fry?

Stir fries are wonderful for making a little meat go a long way.  You generally only need about a pound of meat to make a family-sized stir fry meal.

Bowl of seasoned cooked chicken cut into bit-sized pieces

When selecting meat for your stir fry, look for naturally tender meats.  Stir frying is fast so any meat that doesn’t need a long cooking time to tenderize will work well.  Try sirloin steak, pork, shrimp, or chicken.  You can also try tofu for a vegetarian stir fry.

What Vegetables are Great in a Stir Fry?

When it comes to stir fry recipes, you’ve got lots of vegetable options.  Zucchini, broccoli, cauliflower, bell peppers, mushrooms, baby corn or really just about any vegetable you can think of will work well in a stir fry.

Several small glass containers of finely diced vegetables

Use whatever is left over in your fridge.  Use fresh produce from your garden.  If you prefer, you can also use frozen or canned vegetables.  It’s all going to be cooked and sauced to tasty perfection!

Grains Options

Using grains in your stir fry is a really great way to make your meal stretch.  I like to serve our stir fry over white or brown rice, pasta, rice noodles or quinoa.  Again, just go with what you’ve got or what sounds good to you.  You can’t really go wrong here!

Stir Fry Sauce

Ah, the sauce…it’s what makes stir fry so delicious!  There are lots of pre-made sauces you can find at the grocery store.  You can go really simple and just add a splash of soy sauce to your stir fry.

Or you can do what I like to do and a make a yummy homemade sauce.  Whatever you choose, the sauce will add lots of delicious flavors to your stir fry.

  • Make your sauce first so that it’s ready to add when the meat and vegetables are cooked.
  • Prepare all of your ingredients beforehand.  Chop vegetables and meat into uniform, bite-sized pieces.
  • Get your pan hot before adding ingredients.  You want to hear a nice sizzle when you stir fry.
  • Try adding aromatics like garlic or ginger to your stir fry.
  • Add longer cooking vegetables like carrots and broccoli to your pan or wok a couple of minutes before shorter cooking vegetables like corn.
  • Try to time your grains to finish cooking around the same time that your meat and veggies finish.
  • Don’t forget to garnish!  Try sesame seeds, green onions, nuts, wonton noodles, a squeeze of fresh citrus juice or whatever you desire.

  • sesame seeds
  • sesame sticks
  • wonton noodles

  • sauerkraut

Instructions

MAKE ORANGE GINGER SAUCE

  • Combine all the ingredients for the sauce in a medium size bowl.  Whisk together well.  Set this aside.

COOK YOUR GRAINS

  • Prep and begin cooking your rice, noodles, etc.  The stir fry comes together fairly quick once everything is chopped, so you’ll want this prepared and warm at about the same time.  Cook according to package directions.

PREP THE MEAT/PROTEIN

  • Cut your raw meat into bit size pieces.
  • In a big skillet, wok or pan, add a drizzle of olive oil, butter, coconut oil, almond oil – or whatever healthy fat you have to cook with.
  • Saute/fry the meat pieces over medium high heat until done.  Remove meat from skillet and set aside.

STIR FRY VEGGIES

  • Chop all your veggies into the bite size you prefer.  How many veggies you add depends on the serving size you are making.  The sauce recipe makes enough for about 6 people, so adjust accordingly.  Although – you can never have enough sauce . . . so just make it all!
  • Drizzle more oil into the large skillet you used for the meat, and heat in skillet.  Add the veggies that take longer to cook first (like carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, etc.).  Stir frequently to avoid scorching or overcooking.  Add more oil if needed while cooking.
  • Once they are beginning to soften, add the remaining veggie ingredients – should you have any.  Saute/fry until all the veggies are cooked to your preferred doneness.

COMBINE INGREDIENTS

  • Add the cooked meat back into the pan with the veggies.
  • While still on heat, pour the sauce over the meat and veggies.  Stir constantly until the sauce is warmed through and beginning to thicken.

TO SERVE

  • Dish up by plating your grain down first and topping with a heaping scoop of the stir fry.
  • Garnish to your hearts content.

Notes

-This recipe is written to allow you some creative freedom!  Go with your cooking instincts and add a bit more of this and a bit less of that.  It will turn out great and is very forgiving.
-Store leftovers in the fridge for a couple of days.
