Farmhouse kitchen ideas

Everybody loves a farmhouse kitchen, right?! Well, maybe not everybody, but farmhouse kitchens are definitely popular right now. I love farmhouse kitchens for their rustic charm and timeless elegance. A good farmhouse kitchen always makes me feel cozy and welcome. They are a breath of fresh air!

In this blog post, I want to share some inspiring farmhouse kitchen ideas to help you transform your space into the modern farmhouse of your dreams. I promise you don’t need be a professional interior designer to create a timeless and beautiful kitchen.

Throughout this post, I’ll give you a glimpse at our very own kitchen spaces and how we have applied these farmhouse kitchen ideas.

Simple Farmhouse Cabinets

One of the first features you’ll notice (and love!) in any kitchen are beautiful cabinets. Farmhouse kitchens generally feature simple cabinetry. Think shaker-style cabinets with simple, clean lines and classic designs. Simple cabinets perfectly complement the farmhouse aesthetic.

In our European farmhouse kitchen, we opted for custom-built flat panel cabinet fronts. I love how the simple design allows the other elements of this room to shine. You may want to consider using neutral-colored or white cabinets to create a bright and airy farmhouse kitchen feel. Ours are a mix of a blueish/gray color and white cabinets. The variety of color and styles in your cabinetry keeps things interesting and looking more collected.

Farmhouse Inspired Cabinet Curtains

One of my favorite farmhouse kitchen design ideas is using fabric cabinet curtains in place of lower cabinet doors. I love this look! It’s a sure way to bring some rustic charm into any kitchen. As an added bonus, it’s also a really inexpensive way to update old kitchen cabinets.

In our pole barn home, we chose to use cabinet curtains in our walk-in butler’s pantry. It’s still one of my favorite features in that room. You can read my cabinet curtain tutorial if you want to try this look in your own farmhouse kitchen.

Vintage-Inspired Fixtures

Don’t overlook the kitchen fixtures! Choosing vintage-inspired faucets, cabinet hardware and light fixtures adds an authentic touch to any farmhouse-style kitchen.

In our farmhouse kitchen, we opted for some lovely matte champaign cabinet hardware. We also chose to do an antique-inspired sink and faucet with a marble stone tap and butcher block countertops. In our butler’s pantry we chose to do a unique unlacquered brass faucet. It’s another gorgeous fixture that adds to the farmhouse feel. Don’t be afraid to mix your metals if rustic charm is your goal.

Farmhouse Kitchen Sink

No modern farmhouse kitchen is complete without a farmhouse sink! Farmhouse-style sinks are large deep sinks that are super practical for everyday use, but also serve as a focal point in the kitchen.

I adore mine and you can read all about why I love my single basin sink if you’re interested in getting one for yourself. I recommend looking for apron-front sinks in porcelain or stainless steel or even copper for an authentic farmhouse feel.

Open Shelving

Another of my favorite farmhouse kitchen ideas is to use open shelving for décor and storage in your modern farmhouse design. Try replacing some upper cabinets with open shelves to display your collection of vintage dishes, mason jars, and rustic kitchen accessories. This not only adds visual interest, but also creates a sense of warmth and accessibility.

In our kitchen we used some thrifted antique shelves to display and store dishes. We’ve also got a set of walnut shelves for displaying our favorite copper pots and pans, lovely ceramic dishes, art and cute cutting boards.

Natural Wood Elements

I love using natural wood accents to add warmth and texture to our farmhouse kitchen. One of the ways we incorporated natural wood into our kitchen was by making DIY butcher block counters. It wasn’t as hard as it might seem! I’ll show you how to do it in my DIY butcher block countertops blogpost.

You might want to consider using natural wood elements in your own kitchen for a modern farmhouse look. Think thick wooden beams on your ceiling, exposed wooden shelving, wooden picture frames or a reclaimed wood accent wall. The natural tones of wood work really well in a modern farmhouse style.

Farmhouse Kitchen Table Ideas

Eat-in kitchens, where the dining table is in the kitchen rather than in a separate area, are common features of a modern farm house. We designed our home to have an eat-in kitchen by skipping the usual kitchen island and instead placing our dining table right in the middle of the room.

Our quartz tabletop is durable enough for any kitchen projects we throw at it. It also doubles as a homeschool hub. And of course, the cozy feeling of an eat-in kitchen just amps up the farmhouse charm.

Vintage Kitchenware and Decor

One of the reasons I am drawn to farmhouse kitchens is because of how beautiful they look with my vintage décor. I have a bit of an obsession with antiques, so you better believe that I’ll take advantage of the chance to display them!

In our kitchen, I’ve displayed some of my favorite dishes, vintage cookware, and my favorite antique cutting boards. Try using some of your own kitchenware as décor! Vintage kitchenware pieces not only enhance the farmhouse theme, but they can also be practical.

Natural and Neutral Farmhouse Colors

When selecting a color scheme for your farmhouse kitchen, stick to natural and neutral color shades. Whites, creams, soft grays, and earthy hues are both soothing and timeless. You may want to consider incorporating pops of color through accessories like curtains, rugs, or decorative items.

We chose to use Pure and Original Lime Wash Paints in our farmhouse kitchen for a textured look. You can read what I thought about it in my Pure and Original Paint review. The light color palette keeps this space feeling fresh and clean. Light and neutral colors are a great choice for any farmhouse kitchen.

  1. I love all of your farmhouse design elements. We just renovated our kitchen and chose an English cottage esthetic but many of the elements are the same.

    Have a wonderful weekend.
