What is Clipart?

Clip art is an digital image, illustration or graphic that somebody has pre-made. It is different from a photograph taken from a camera. You can use that image or graphic in your own digital creations without needing to design it yourself. Clip art is designed to be user friendly, even for people without technical skill.

There are tons of types of clip art out there. From simple doodles and basic graphic elements to intricate images and inspirational designs. Just about every subject under the sun is represented in clipart. If you can dream it, there’s probably some clip art for it! But for today’s purposes, let’s help you find fun valentines day clipart for your projects.

What can You Use Clipart For Besides Valentines?

Clipart images are useful in many ways. Clipart allows you to illustrate a point, show examples, and enhance the visual appeal of whatever you are designing.

You can use clipart in your presentations, website designs, social media, memos, party invitations, Christmas cards, announcements or anything else that would benefit from having some type of image. And since clipart is ready made, it makes your projects quite a bit simpler.

You can upload and customize clipart with software like Canva, Photoshop, google docs, or any other software that allows for graphics to be uploaded.

Types of Clipart

Clip art comes in two basic types – free and paid. You can find websites dedicated to both types and both can be great resources.

Shutterstock has an article called What is Clip Art? which gives a great explanation about the purpose of clipart, how to use it and some great examples. Lot’s of really useful information. It’s worth a read if you’re new to clip art.

What You Should Know About Using Clipart

There are a few other details you will want to be aware of when using clip art, such as whether the clip art you’ve chosen is allowed for commercial use, whether you need to include a written attribution to the owner, or whether the image is only allowed to be used in limited situations.

These details are part of the licensing agreement for the clipart and can be found on the websites. Make sure you check out those licensing terms before you start your project.

As a caution, be very careful about downloading anything on to your device. Make sure the site looks legit and is a trusted resource.

Free Valentines Clipart Sources

Now, onto the list of websites for free Valentine’s Day clipart!

As you read this list, keep in mind that some of these web sites will offer both free and paid clipart, so their names may appear in both lists. Here are some things to notice when you are looking for the free download options:

  • You may also find both free and paid options on some of these websites.
  • A lot of the clipart is free to download, with no strings attached (or in other words, “royalty free”).
  • Check to see if the site offers a search filter for browsing only free images, so you don’t fall in love with one that requires payment or an account creation.
  • Some sites require you to create an account in order to access the free download
  • You may be able to download a specific amount of clipart for free, and then they ask for a paid service
  • Some free art calls for attribution requirements to be used
  • Carefully read the licensing requirements before using in your own projects, whether personal or commercially
  • Some sites offer vector only downloads, but most of these offer many formatting options such as png, jpg, etc.

When you click over to each website, it is best to search specifically for “Valentines clipart” or “Valentines Day“, to get the search filtered for this type of content we are talking about today. But these lists can be a great resource for any category of digital art.
