Solve this riddle for me.

2 words.

What is the one thing that will always come back for more, loves to be messy, no one but Mom seems to mind, and shockingly clears a room in a matter of seconds?

You guessed it.

DIRTY DISHES.

Sigh . . . dirty dishes.

I’m a mom of 4 kids, and my day generally looks like this.

Breakfast.  Dishes.  Pack lunches.  Dishes.  Snacks.  Dishes.  Lunch.  Dishes.  After-school snack.  Dishes.  Dinner.  Lots of dishes.

Sound familiar to anyone?  The only thing us Moms probably do more of than social media . . . is dishes.

Upon this realization, I decided my fate was not to escape this chore, but to aim to make it more enjoyable.  This consisted of waiting until the kids were entertained, turning on some relaxing background music, dimming the lights and finding the best smelling and environmentally safe products to use.

I have to first say, I know no one more sensitive to chemicals than myself.  It’s gotten worse through the years, particularly after baby #4.  But anything harsh, scented or dyed makes my skin burn and itch and initiates a migraine.

I’ve bought all the overly priced non-scented and non-dyed products in the grocery store – to no avail.  I’ve tried homemade versions that felt better, but worked like spit.

My husband claimed it was all in my head, but I knew something was off and began to be concerned with all the chemicals I was using in our home.

That’s when I discovered Grove.

And honestly, I was skeptical at first.  I actually waited 4 months and spent hundreds of dollars to trial their products before I felt like I could write something for you here that I could really back up.

By sorting my way through product after product, I feel like I’ve finally narrowed it down to finding the cleaning supplies that made my everyday task of doing the dishes feel more like a spa experience than a chore.

I wanted to share my findings with you, in hopes that it might help you find a sliver of joy from doing the dishes as well, give you an alternative to chemically harmful products, but also to help you discover the answer to the gift idea for that hard-to-shop-for person on your list.

You are seeing a lot of Mrs. Meyer’s products in these images, and for a good reason.  My first experience with Mrs. Meyer’s happened when in desperation I grabbed their laundry detergent at the grocery store.

I’d tried everything “gentle” you could imagine, and still felt itchy in my clothes and laundry day was basically migraine day.  Some stuff proved to be okay for my body, but didn’t clean our clothes worth a darn and didn’t make them smell fresh.

After a week of using this new Mrs. Meyer’s detergent, I was hooked.  My clothes smelled so good and I wasn’t experiencing the terrible side effects.

That’s when I determined to try everything Mrs. Meyer’s.  And lucky for us, they don’t just have incredible laundry detergents.  Double lucky for us, their seasonal scents are to die for!

I’m going to share with you my absolute favorites to have on hand while doing the dishes.  These are the products that if I could have someone gift me my dream dish washing experience, these are what I would want included.

I’d love to discuss general cleaning supplies, laundry supplies, etc . . . but we will have to leave that for another day.

Today is about dirty dishes.

*(Please be sure to make it to the end of the post where I share the best place for you to purchase these products for the best deals, and give you a little background on Grove . . . which by the way . . . you’ll get to try some products for FREE!)

First and foremost, I would want these gloves.

They are latex gloves, but have a soft cotton lining which means my hands don’t smell like rubber after washing dishes or doing nasty jobs.  I don’t love that they are green (blue or white would be right up my ally), but they sure do the dirty work.

Next up is dishwasher detergent.

We put food on our dishes and eat from them, right?  It’s good to know that my dishes are washed with soap that is plant derived, made with natural minerals, smells good because of essential oils and does not have chlorine, phosphates, formaldehyde, or artificial colors.  And it works great!

Next up is my new essential porcelain sink cleaner.

I’ve always used straight bleach on my porcelain sink because nothing else seemed to whiten it.  Oh how bleach would make me so very sick, but I did it for the sake of a white sink.  It took a serious pep talk to myself to motivate me to get sick for the sake of a clean sink.

No more my friends.  This powder surface scrub seriously shocked me and cleaned my sink as good as bleach any day, without the burning, itchy skin.  I’m so relieved to have discovered it!

Next up, I love these Walnut sponge scrubbers.

I mostly think the color tones are just super pretty, but they work great for scrubbing those stubborn burns off of pans.

Then I just have to have my yummy smelling all-purpose spray.  New scents each month!

I love it to add a freshness to my counter tops or to scrub the appliances.

And dish soap, of course.

The burst of aromatherapy smelly goodness is enough for me.  If you could bottle Christmas, this would be how!  I get ridiculously excited to squirt this in my hot water.

I love a yummy smelling hand soap as well.

I wouldn’t waist the brain power it would take to count how many times I wash my hands in a day, but this soap is gentle, moisturizing and smells good enough to eat.

Next up, I’ve come to love this scrub brush which dispenses soap and has a removable and replaceable brush head.

Finally, I like to keep a yummy smelling essential oil near my dish washing station to drop in the water to relax and calm my mind, and make my house smell even better.

Throw all these goodies in a cute little bucket (found mine at World Market), and I think you have a gift that will truly delight someone special this Holiday season.  Even if that special someone is yourself, you know a lot of dishes are coming with the Holidays, so go ahead and treat yo’self!

Now that I’ve shared my dream dish washing care package with you, I’ve also tried a few other brands from Grove that I liked well enough.  I did weed out a few that were still too strong for me (but again, I’m kind of a chemical baby).

I have enjoyed the Seventh Generation brand.

Their detergent packs work great and I like to keep a pack of disinfectant wipes around for when I cook with meats.

I also tried this Caldrea brand of countertop spray.  It left my countertops nice and shiny clean and is another great option aside from Mrs. Meyers all-purpose sprays.

Although, if it isn’t obvious yet, I’m pretty fond of Mrs. Meyer’s.

So much so, there are a handful of loved ones getting some hand soap, dish soap, or spray cleaner for Christmas from me.

Although I’ll be sure to keep some for myself too.  It might not be until next year when these scents come out again!

Just think of Peppermint, Orange Clove and Pine.  mmmmmm.

Before I wrap things up, let me share a little background about Grove, and why I use them to order these products.

You can read more about what Grove stands for on their site, but I love that they have done all the research on products and have selected the most chemically and environmentally safe products for us.

There are many ways you can choose to buy from Grove, but I have chosen to be a VIP member (which you can too!) after I discovered the benefits.  I get free shipping, great prices, referral credits, first dibs on new products and scents, and my own personal Grove assistant.  (The seasonal scents do sell out, so it’s nice to know right when they come in).

Because I love this service so much, I also signed up to be on their referral program, which allows me to offer you a FREE Mrs. Meyer’s hand soap and $10.00 credit if you start your shopping through THIS LINK HERE.

If I were you, I would click over fast and snag the Holiday scents left while I could (although there are new yummy ones every month), and cruise around Grove to see what else they have to offer and the great prices you’ll find.

If you’ve found a cleaning or personal care product you love, would you let me know in the comments below?  I would be very anxious to give them a try as well!

Thanks so much for reading today, and please let me know if you have any questions at all about this article.

  1. I do a lot of my shopping through Grove and love the products you have reviewed!! The seasonal scents are amazing–this is my first year to try them. Thanks for your post.

  2. This would all be perfect for me….except the gloves. I am allergic to latex. And sometimes finding some non latex gloves that don’t wear out as fast is so hard!
