Mr. Tidbits and I have a bit of experience building DIY raised garden beds. We built some up at our old pole barn home and absolutely loved using them for our kitchen herb garden. We knew it was a must to have some at the Lavender Blue Cottage as well.

However, time has been in short supply this year. We sold our pole barn home and moved, remade an old RV and hit the road for a special family vacation. Things have been busy! And this mom is tired! I was thinking that garden boxes just wouldn’t happen this year, despite my good intentions.

Enter Eartheasy to save my gardening dreams! Their raised garden bed kits turned out to be a fantastic option for us during this busy year. I know you’re going to love them too! Let me show you what makes these raised garden bed kits so amazing.

Building Our Cedar Raised Bed Gardens Step-by-Step

Putting together these raised garden boxes was a snap! Let me show you how we did it in a few simple steps.

1: Prepping the Ground

There was an area right off our patio that was full of ground cover. I decided that this would be the perfect spot for some garden boxes.

A patio is surrounded by green ground cover plants

We began by clearing the ground cover with a tractor, leveling out the ground and bringing in some dirt. This was the hardest and longest part of the process for us, but you may not have to do much prep depending on where you want to build your garden boxes.

2: Assembling the Raised Bed Garden Boxes

After the ground was ready, we assembled the Eartheasy Natural Cedar Raised Garden Beds in no time. It was as simple as unpacking and putting the parts together.

The pre-cut cedar boards had holes drilled through the ends which allowed us to assemble them with steel pins running through each corner for added stability.

The cedar boards are designed with notches in the end to allow them to nestle together like a log cabin. Nice and easy!

Steel rods also run across the middle of the garden boxes to prevent them from bowing out when the inside is filled with soil and water.

We finished the boxes off by securing everything with screws and adding the beautiful trim pieces.

3: Filling the Raised Garden Bed Boxes and Finishing the Ground

Once everything was assembled it was time to fill our garden boxes with soil. We were lucky to inherit a large pile of topsoil from our home’s previous owners. That went in the bottom of the boxes followed by several cubic feet of organic compost which we purchased.

In addition to filling the garden boxes, we also laid down some cardboard from the packaging of the products and paper on the ground between the raised boxes to act as a weed barrier. You could use landscape fabric for this step, but cardboard and paper were what we had on hand and they provided us a cheap way to deter weed growth.

Next, we spread some gravel and placed paver stones around the raised garden boxes to make this area a little more user-friendly for us. No muddy shoes – hurray!

4: Purchasing Plants for Our Garden Boxes

Ideally, I would have liked to start seeds for the garden, but that wasn’t going to happen this year. Instead, we headed to the store to pick up some plants for our new garden boxes.

It was great to browse the different vegetables and herbs at the nursery. I found quite a few favorites that were just begging to come home with me.

Don’t feel bad adding a few of your favorite flowers to the mix. A garden should be a happy place, after all!

5: Planting and Adding Trellises

I love planting a garden and these cedar raised bed gardens were no exception. We even added the Eartheasy Natural Cedar A-Frame Trellis structures to a couple of the garden boxes to support our green bean plants.

Aren’t they gorgeous?! I can’t wait to see the trellises covered in green leaves.
