Did I ever tell you how my husband and I met?

It is certainly not your average collage student neighbor or blind date kind of story. Ā Nope.

We met on a dude ranch.

Not even joking.

I had moved back home from college for the Summer, and was desperately trying to find temporary Summer employment. Ā But it appeared no one was interested in temporary, so I began looking for Summer camp counselor jobs, or the like.

That’s when I discovered this Summer job listing for a Dude Ranch in Jackson Hole, Wyoming for a kitchen staff and service job.

Still to this day, I have no idea what drove me to think that would be a great job – but I applied, was accepted, bought my first pair of Wranglers and saddled up for Wyoming.

I promise this relates to the printable šŸ˜‰

At any rate, I managed to pull up to this dude ranch, nerves and all, and stepped out of my baby blue Honda accord. Ā The first thing I saw was a crew of Wrangler wearing, cowboy hat strutting, yee-haw kind of folks all painting a deck.

I’ve never felt so out of place in my life.

But low and behold, one handsome cowboy in wonderfully tight jeans walked up to greet me. Ā I kid you not, the first thought that went through my head was . . .

“Helloooooo cowboy”.

At least I’m pretty sure it was only in my head. Ā šŸ˜‰

Well, folks . . . the rest is history . . . and wedding bells . . . and 4 babies . . . and lots of stories for another day. Ā But today, I want to talk about the moment I knew he would be my husband some day.

It wasn’t the jeans. Ā It wasn’t the tip of the hat. Ā It wasn’t even his dashing smile.

It was a nice cool summer Wyoming night, when he started to hum and sing the song “The Rose”.

You see, the song, “THE ROSE” holds a very special place in my heart. Ā Growing up, my daddy would often sing this song to us as he would tuck us in bed. Ā Or it was not uncommon at all to hear him singing it while cooking something up in the kitchen.

If you read my post earlierĀ on my reflections of the “Spring of 1996”, you already know he passed away when I was just 11 years old. Ā  So to hear my then handsome cowboy of a boyfriend,Ā sing the very song which comforted me as a little girl with my dad at our bedside, and to hear again theĀ words that brought such peace to me after he passed on . . .

Well, let’s just say it was all I could do to stop myself from proposing to him that very moment.

I knew deep down inside, my daddy had found this handsome fella for me, and “The Rose” would live on.

How was that for super cheesy? Ā šŸ˜‰ Ā A little too much like a Hallmark film??

It’s a true story, friends!

Any way, fast forward 10 or so years, I actually made this print out for my mother when it seemed she was having a hard time. Ā I desperately wanted her to hold onto hope, and recall the tender words sung so often by her husband.

“Just remember, in the Winter, far beneath the bitter snow.

Lies a seed, that with the sun’s love, in the Spring, becomes . . . the rose.”

She has hung the print on her wall for quite some time, and it dawned on me that it could also be something I share with you here!

I made up some stationary options for you as well, in hopes that you can deliver this message to a loved one who may also need some hope to hang on to.

  1. I love this printable and the entirety of your work. I may really get some of them printed, lol!! I never appear to print anything I spare! My significant other cherished the melody, “What a Difference You’ve Made in My Life”. It was recorded by Amy Grant and afterward again by Ronnie Milsap. His form is the one I heard and really had no clue Amy Grant recorded it. It is an exceptionally sweet melody and can apply to the Lord or individuals throughout your life. Figured you should seriously think about itā€¦ ā€¦ .

  2. Hello! 1st- I teared up at your story?? 2nd- My love for this song goes back over 30yrs to my 10-yo self. My reason for loving it isn’t near as good as yours, but I love it while-heartedly just the same.
I recently introduced my kids to it and they love the song as well – especially my 10yo spec needs kiddo – which leads me to posting this comment. I know it’s been a couple of years since this was posted, but I wanted to see if you would consider doing a background in color (?) Specifically pink, her favorite. I want to hang this in her room. I know it’s asking a lot. If not, I’ll find a way to make it”girly” enough for her?. Thanks so much for offering up the free printables.

  3. I love this printable and all of your work. I might actually get some of them printed, lol!! I never seem to print anything I save! My husband loved the song, “What a Difference You’ve Made in My Life”. It was recorded by Amy Grant and then again by Ronnie Milsap. His version is the one I heard and actually had no idea Amy Grant recorded it. It is a very sweet song and can apply to the Lord or people in your life. Thought you might consider it…….

  4. I have a story about The Rose too. I’m not the guy in the story, I’m sharing the story like I received it.

    My Name Is Rose
The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn’t already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being. She said, “Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I’m eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?”

I laughed and enthusiastically responded, “Of course you may!” and she gave me a giant squeeze.

“Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?” I asked.

She jokingly replied, “I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel.”

“No seriously,” I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age.

“I always dreamed of having a college education and now I’m getting one!” she told me.

After class we walked to the student union building and shared chocolate milkshake. We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always mesmerized listening to this “time machine” as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.

Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up. At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I’ll never forget what she taught us.

She was introduced and stepped up to the podium. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her three by five cards on the floor. Frustrated and a little embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and simply said, “I’m sorry I’m so jittery. I gave up beer for Lent and this whiskey is killing me! I’ll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know.”

As we laughed she cleared her throat and began, “We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing.

There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You’ve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walking around who are dead and don’t even know it! There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up.

If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don’t do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn eighty-eight. Anybody can grow older. That doesn’t take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change.

Have no regrets. The elderly usually don’t have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets.”

She concluded her speech by courageously singing “The Rose.” She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives.

At the years end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago.

One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that it’s never too late to be all you can possibly be.

    The Rose by Bette Midler

Some say love, it is a river, that drowns the tender reed
Some say love, it is a razor, that leaves your soul to bleed
Some say love, it is a hunger, an endless aching need
I say love, it is a flower and you, its only seed

Itā€™s the heart afraid of breaking, that never learns to dance
Itā€™s the dream afraid of waking, that never takes a chance
Itā€™s the one that won’t be taking, that cannot seem to give
It’s the one afraid of dying, that never learns to live

When the night has been too lonely and the road has been too long
And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong
Just remember in the winter, far beneath the bitter snow
Lies the seed, that with the sun’s love in the spring becomes the rose.

    1. That was truly the most touching story I’ve heard in a long long time. It should be a movie! I can’t thank you enough for taking the time to share that with me. It has touched my heart deeply and inspired me beyond words today. God bless!!

  5. I have got to get myself a new printer. I loved your story it’s wonderful in our lives when memories are shared, thank you.

  6. What a beautiful story. I have MANY things that I would like to make ‘printable s’. But I don’t know how to. I don’t have much computer experience. I am just getting into ‘this’ printable thing and wanting to change up picture frames out with the seasons…quotes…lyrics etc… I would love to know how to do it myself. I googled the words..but I can not seem to get them to print ‘big’ enough for my liking. One I really want is ‘Not to spoil the ending for you; but everything is going to be OK’ (something I AM trying to strongly BELIEVE in for my own life right now…just FYI ) Any tips….suggestions…and or help you could give would be greatly appreciated.
    Laura

  7. so clever and perfect for spring. I think I’ll put in my powder room I’ve been struggling to decorate. Now I have a start.

  8. I have a song that I would love to see in a printable. It is “the Twelvth of Never” Originally recorded by Osmond Brothers. It is my husband and I song from when we met in 1973. If I can also add a suggestion. With flowers. But I will take anything.
