Hello friend, thanks for joining me! To see the others spaces I am decorating this year for fall, visit these posts:

Today I’m decorating the living room of our pole barn home for fall.

If you follow me here, then you’ll know that I love decorating my living room for fall. My love for it goes way back to my first fall living room tour and fall entry way tours at our old house.

We’ve come a long way since then. Now, we’re in a new home working with new spaces, but what hasn’t changed is my desire to bring the beauty of fall into my home. It’s a magical time of year and I want to enjoy those fall hues, natural elements and relaxing evenings with my family.

Cleaning and Refreshing the Living Room

They do say “work before play”, right? So that’s what I did.

Before diving into my fall living room decorating I gave my living room a thorough cleaning. For me, this included removing and washing our linen slip covers to get everything feeling clean and fresh.

If you have linen slip covers of pillow covers like I do, you know how wrinkly they can get after washing and drying. To avoid this problem, I put my slip covers back on while they are wet. This way the covers dry to the form of my couch and end up with a smooth and crisp finish.

Choosing a Fall Color Scheme

After I’ve got a nice clean living room, it’s time for deciding on the fall color palette. I like to pull out all of my linens. This includes pillow covers, throw blankets – anything cozy, and narrow down what colors I would like to use for the season.

I chose to decorate with a lot of rusty orange and sage green shades this year. They blend really well with the creamy, neutral colors of my home. You can see some of that color combination below in our rust orange blanket and sage green accent pillow.

Any color that reminds you of fall could be part of your color scheme. I once did a blush pink and copper fall color scheme that was really beautiful. You could try shades of orange, yellow, burgundy – whatever you like! Playing with new color schemes is one of the best parts of fall living room decorating!

Cozy Up with Fall-Inspired Linens

Along with color, I like to look for interesting textures when I choose linens. Texture adds a lot of interest to otherwise neutral interiors. This textured muslin blanket that we keep on our sofa is a good example of this.

Do you have some blankets or pillows with interesting textures like velvet, faux fur or leather? These can look great with your fall living room decorations and the different textures keep things from feeling bland.

I like to layer our living room furniture with an assortment of throw pillows and blankets to add warmth and coziness to this room. The green gingham blanket and brown plaid blanket below are a couple of new additions this year.

Baskets for Living Room Decor and Storage

I’ve been trying a new solution for storage and clutter lately – baskets! I love baskets of all types and I use them a lot. Lately, I decided that adding some baskets to throw the kids’ clutter into would be really helpful in keeping our home feeling clean.

I also like to keep our books in a basket in the living room. It’s a handy way to keep our books organized and accessible. There is just something about wicker baskets that works really well with fall decor, don’t you think?

Fall Living Room Decorating with Natural Elements

To keep our fall living room decorations low-cost, I brought in a lot of natural elements this year. And why not, when nature provides such beauty for free?

For our coffee table, I selected a green heirloom pumpkin that we grew in our garden. I paired it with some field grass clippings in a vase to create a simple centerpiece for our table. Totally free and totally charming!

I also snipped some branches of fall leaves to place on our piano. Again, this didn’t cost me anything, but it looks great and adds a touch of fall color to my living room.

If you have some cute gourds, mini pumpkins or pretty plants growing around you, these can all make for a charming fall centerpiece. Often, you can grow or find these things to decorate your living room for free.

Repurposing Decor for Fall Living Room Decorations

Finally, I used some of our existing decor that reminded me of fall. For me, this was set of antiqued brass swans that I place on our fireplace mantel. The brass color feels like fall to me and it plays well the other accent colors in my fall living room decorations.

You can repurpose your own existing decorations to decorate for fall as well. A simple serving bowl would look great filled with pinecones. A Christmas wreath can be tweaked with fall accent colors. Regular household accessories like candles can become fall decor when you arrange them with berries or acorns.

I have found that I really don’t need a lot of decorations to transition my home from one season to the next. Often, I can decorate my home for free or nearly free. The best decorations truly do come from nature, so see what you can find around you to bring a touch of fall beauty to your home.
