Delicious, healthy cake-like brownies recipe – it’s the stuff of healthy eating dreams! Enjoy your favorite chocolate treat without the guilt!
Sometimes you just need some chocolate. That’s a fact of life. Who agrees with me?
We’ve all got our favorite chocolate fixes. Even though I try to eat healthy and keep my sugar intake low, I still get the I-need-chocolate-now cravings.
When these cravings strike I have a couple of healthy chocolate treats that I turn to. One of them is Crio Bru. I adore a nice cup of frozen Crio Bru, pressure cooker peppermint Crio Bru, or pressure cooker pumpkin spice Crio Bru. So good!
Another of my favorite go-to chocolate recipes are these rich and decadent cake-like brownies. These brownies are tasty enough for dessert, but healthy enough for breakfast. And yes, we’ve done that! 🙂

Healthy Cake Like Brownies
Ingredients
- 1/3-1/2 cup raw honey
- 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup white whole wheat flour or flour of your choice
- 1/4 tsp aluminum-free baking powder
- 1/4 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup unsweetened apple sauce
- 2 Tbsp olive oil
- 1 egg, at room temperature
- 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
Instructions
- Heat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and grease an 8×8 dish with olive oil, coconut oil or avocado oil.
- In a small bowl or measuring cup, mix together the honey and cocoa powder with a fork or whisk until well combined. You may need to warm the honey slightly to make it more stir-able.
- In another bowl, mix together the dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt).
- In another large mixing bowl, whisk together the wet ingredients (apple sauce, oil, egg and vanilla). Once well combined, pour in the chocolate and honey mixture and stir all wet ingredients together until you get an even consistency.
- Add the flour mixture (dry ingredients) to the combined wet ingredients. Stir gently until no traces of the dry mixture remain.
- Add the brownie batter to your prepared baking pan.
- Bake just until the surface looks dry around the edges. Do not overcook, as this will yield a dryer brownie. With this recipe in an 8×8 pan, it should take about 13 minutes. However, if you tried different flours or if you doubled or tripled the recipe, you will need to watch it carefully to suit the pan, flour and amount of batter you made. You can insert a toothpick in the center and it should come out with some moist crumbs on it.
- Let brownies cool completely before slicing into them.
What Makes These Chocolate Brownies Healthy?
One of my favorite things about this brown recipe is how well it turns out when using healthy ingredients.
Rather than using a bunch of processed sugar, I use a combination of unsweetened apple sauce and raw honey as natural sweeteners. You can also use pure maple syrup, agave nectar, coconut sugar or whatever healthy sweetener you prefer.
Another reason I love these brownies is because the flour is easy to change, and the results are great no matter what healthy flour you use. White whole wheat flour is my personal favorite in this recipe, but you could use gluten free flour, oat flour, almond flour, spelt, einkorn or whatever flour works best for you.
And for my lactose intolerant friends – you are in luck! This recipe is naturally dairy free.

How to Make a More Fudgy Brownie
This recipe makes a nice cakey brownie, but if you prefer the texture of a more fudge-like brownie, you can reduce the cook time and leave the center more moist. You can also use less flour. If you choose to fully cook these healthy brownies, they will come out with a crisp, chewy top and a moist center. Yum!
Variations of This Healthy Brownie Recipe
Like I mentioned earlier, this recipe is super adaptable. You can adjust the type and amount of sweetener to whatever you tolerate best.
Likewise, the flexibility of the flour choices means that you can use whatever healthy flour your prefer in your diet. It can even be gluten free with the use of a gluten free flour!
There are a whole host of other additions you can add to your healthy brownies to customize them and take them to the next level. Think things like peanut butter, dark chocolate chips, nuts, or something similarly delicious.
Personally, I love to have these healthy brownies with a sprinkle of powdered sugar or a drizzle of melted chocolate for an extra special indulgence. It’s so good!
Storing Your Healthy Brownies
These brownies are usually gone in a flash at my house! If you’re lucky enough to have leftovers, you can store the cooled brownies in an airtight container for 2-3 days. They’ll taste just as yummy on day two!
You can also freeze these brownies by tightly wrapping the cooled brownies and placing them in a freezer safe container. Store in the freezer for up to two months.
