Introducing our plans, progress, and mood board for our nature and earthy inspired kids bedroom with a play loft. This kids’ bedroom design is another renovation we’re doing in our pole barn house.
I’m excited to share our newest home project with you! After over a year of living in our unfinished pole barn home we built and designed ourselves, we are finally getting to the kids’ bedroom. See how we have saved money by building pole barn style!
Having put our focus first on the main living spaces like the kitchen, master bathroom, living room… the bedrooms had to just be patient as we went as fast as time and money would allow.

Before I show you my design plans, let me first explain my thought process so you can understand why we are doing what we are doing.
First of all, who is the room for?
This shared room we are doing first is for my 10-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son.
Their personalities are very similar, so from a design perspective, it makes perfect sense to room them together. I think we will have a few more years before the boy/girl room won’t work, so we are going to embrace it.
Then second, what are our needs?
We didn’t have space to build a hangout area for the kids, so I really wanted to create a kind of space like that in their bedrooms. So we decided to build a play loft area above the beds.
Another question I asked was, how can we maximize the space? I couldn’t add square footage in our home for a hangout room, unless we went up!
With all that in consideration, we sketched up a plan for our kids’ bedroom design.
The room is considerably long for a bedroom so the play loft platform will run vertically through most of the room.
When you view these pictures, just remember . . . things always get worse before they get better!
Hubs has built the loft floor, the walls and has sheet-rocked and mudded the new walls. He cut out windows in these walls and added a cubby space.
We have installed some pine shiplap planks to the back of the bed areas and on the ceiling.
I think this will add the perfect amount of natural wood texture to these cute little spaces.
We’ve also made some progress on the play loft.
We picked up some inexpensive flooring, and my husband has already installed it in the loft area above.
We will have space for two queen beds underneath in a cozy little nook. Adding some Beddy’s bedding will keep the bed making easy and beautiful! (If you are shopping for Beddy’s, use the coupon code “TIDBITS”!)
There is even potential to add a sleeper sofa up in the loft.
We have never had room for family guests to stay overnight, so with the two queen beds and sleep potential upstairs, we feel like we truly have maximized the space.
When it’s all complete, we will build some steep stairs up to the loft, and have a beautiful railing.
Over by the window past the platform wall, we have the perfect amount of space for a cozy little reading nook and some bench storage.
Mood Board for Kids’ Bedroom Design
Let me show you a quick look at the mood board I’ve been playing with. I like to pull these together in photoshop elements which I also shared in another post.
My plan is to paint the two walls in the cozy bed nooks a different color. I want to bring in some really nice color and texture by using Pure & Originals Marrakech paint.
The other walls will have different wallpapers, which I have never done in our home before. We did it in the RV, but not in a home.
My prairie girl’s space will have this sweet little yellow sunflower paper. She adores yellow, and I can’t handle too much of it, so I feel this was a good balance.
Then on the far wall and the long wall, I’m picking between some amazing outdoor murals that I feel will give it a natural vibe, but I think the one you see in the mood board from Murals Wallpaper is by far my favorite!
Then to balance all the color and variety, the wall with the window and behind the loft will just be a creamy white. Or perhaps a nice textured warm white in the Pure & Original Fresco lime wash paint.
So here is the full list of the following elements we’re using:
- Walnut wood for loft stairs and railing
- Pine planks for the inside bed area
- Large nature etching from Muralswallpaper
- Sunflower wallpaper for my girl’s bed wall
- Linen light fixture
- Beddy’s Bed in Natural Boho (use coupon code TIDBITS)
- Paint colors: Main Home, Marrakech, and Fresco
I hope you enjoyed seeing the plans for our kids’ bedroom design! I can’t promise how quick this will come together but I hope to take you along for the ride.
Thanks for joining me on this journey of building our home!
Wow. This is impressive. Thank you.
Impressive article! Thank you.
You delivered it so well. I hope you make some more of this article. Thank you.
This is such an adorable and cozy room!! Great Idea. They will be such good company for each other and have fun too. I love the idea of the loft and putting a sleeper sofa up there. It all looks fantastic.
When my 3 older kiddos were younger (1 girl 2 boys) they shared a room for several years, and they enjoyed it. Everynow and then, as adults now, they talk about it.
So sorry to sound negative but I find this room so dark and scary. The only highlight is the yellow flowers. I also think they are too old to be in one bedroom together. But whatever works for your family…no judging…
I think this is a wonderful idea, those areas are so cute and creative, is there anything you two can’t do! This will be so fun to see when you are finished, take your time and blessings to you and your family.
I love seeing and hearing about your choices and whole process for creating a cohesive and timeless design! Thanks for sharing
I’m glad you like to see the process Robin. Thanks so much for visiting!
Great Plan. I think a mural is a wonderful idea. That forest seems a little spooky to me for kids….But everyone has different tastes. I am anxious to see it all finished and the kids will have so much fun with that loft area.
Thank you! I hope it isn’t spooky in person! The kids loved it when I showed them so crossing my fingers!
What a cute idea! Can’t wait to see the finished product. I must say your husband’s t-shirt is very fitting…he is a “superman “! 😊
Haha! I’ll have to tell him that. He will love it ;). Thanks so much.
